Requirements
  • Effectively facilitate communication using both source and target language, cultural mediation, and knowledge about accessibility.
  • Adhere to federal and state laws regarding medical interpreting, as well as system and department policies.
  • Attend medical education and information seminars and assimilate the material received.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality while independently organizing, planning, and scheduling interpreter requests and setting appropriate priorities.
  • Abide by the national standards of practice and ethics defined by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care and the International Medical Interpreters Association.
  • Respect and understand Limited English Proficient clients, including their culture, dialect, beliefs, and preferences as they relate to medical care.
  • Have extensive knowledge of the code of ethics and standards of practice established by the International Medical Interpreters Association, National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, and National Council on Interpreting in Health Care.
  • Be familiar with the medical profession, HIPAA privacy laws, and other state and federal laws applicable to medical interpreting.
  • Hold a current driver's license.
  • Possess a driving record suitable for Covenant Health Systems operations and corporate risk management.
  • Be able to pass a language assessment if certifications are unavailable in the candidate's language.
  • Perform the physical and mental tasks associated with the position, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasional lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds.
  • Perform all essential functions with reasonable accommodation if disabled.
Responsibilities
  • Provide oral interpretation, limited written translation, and medical escort services for Limited English Proficient patients, their families, and healthcare providers in patient care settings.
  • Provide remote video and audio interpreting.
  • Facilitate simultaneous and consecutive communication.
  • Provide support to the Interpreter Services Departments under the direction of the Director or Manager, including staff education, data entry, and reminder phone calls.
  • Maintain accuracy, confidentiality, and quality in interpretation services.
  • Support and promote the mission and values of Covenant Health Systems and the Catholic Health Ministry.
  • Maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with employees, physicians, other departments, and the public.
  • Endure periods of heavy workload or stress.
  • Remain objective, articulate, organized, even-tempered, and flexible.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the role.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of community or medical interpreting experience.
  • Certifications endorsed by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters or Certified Medical Interpreter certification.
  • Credentialing in medical interpreting through programs such as Bridging the Gap, MiTio, Ascentria Language Bank, Cross-Cultural training, or a 40-hour accredited medical course.
