Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • One to two years of experience in a medical office setting is preferred.
  • Ability to multitask while presenting a positive and comforting presence with patients and families.
  • Efficient typing, filing, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to perform light lifting, pushing, and pulling of 10–20 pounds occasionally and move objects weighing less than 10 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to sit frequently and walk, stand, squat, bend, and reach as required.
  • Ability to use a keyboard or computer and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to complete required training and computer-based learning requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Greet patients and gather all information needed for efficient encounters and billing outcomes.
  • Precept new employees and serve as a mentor and resource to staff needing additional guidance.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls, respond to inquiries and requests, refer calls appropriately, and relay complete messages while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Open and route incoming mail, retrieve patient charts, provide schedules to providers and staff, and prepare new patient records and charts.
  • Assist patients and families with paperwork and verification documents needed for complete patient and billing files.
  • Register new patients, update patient information in the scheduling system, and verify and create subscriber information in the computer system.
  • Copy, file, and retrieve medical records as requested.
  • Call parents to remind them of appointment dates and times.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and provide necessary forms for parents.
  • Interview and identify legal guardians to obtain information needed to complete accounts.
  • Identify problems that could prevent clean claim submission.
  • Review procedure and diagnosis codes, work with the Revenue/Billing Office to appeal denials, and provide records or information for denial disputes.
  • Handle patient and family complaints confidentially, promptly, and professionally, responding within 24 hours.
  • Maintain confidentiality of hospital and patient information and discuss accounts only with staff who need the information to perform their work.
  • Maintain professional relationships and work effectively with department and cross-department teams.
  • Complete required training and educational programs, follow safe lifting and body-mechanics procedures, and maintain a safe, clean work area.
  • Use hospital resources and time respectfully and efficiently.
  • Collect deductibles, self-payments, and receipts.
  • Complete end-of-day financial tasks, balance credit card machines, and provide financial information to the Children's Financial Services team.
  • Identify missing charges and National Drug Code indicators and assign appropriate modifiers.
  • Accept other assignments as requested.
