JOB PURPOSE:
The Associate Dean for Faculty Research is pivotal in advancing the research mission of Howard University School of Law. This position provides leadership and vision for faculty research, fostering a robust scholarly environment. The Associate Dean oversees all research-related initiatives, supports the development of interdisciplinary legal scholarship, and ensures strategic use of resources to maintain the school’s standing as a leader in legal education and social justice.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
The Associate Dean for Faculty Research oversees faculty involved in research activities and liaises with staff responsible for research administration. This position also provides mentorship and guidance to faculty, helping to expand their research portfolios and ensuring compliance with grant and institutional regulations. Reports to the Dean of the Law School, Roger Fairfax.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal Contacts: Faculty members, the Dean, the Associate Dean for Administration, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, and staff members from the Office of Research Administration (ORA), Institutional Review Board (IRB), and other academic departments within Howard University.
External Contacts: Collaborations with other academic institutions, legal research bodies, funding agencies, government entities, and external grant-making organizations.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Lead and provide oversight for the faculty research committee, ensuring strategic alignment with the law school's mission.
- Manage the research budget, approving indirect cost waivers and evaluating grant cost-sharing opportunities.
- Oversee existing research centers and evaluate potential opportunities for new research centers or partnerships.
- Foster interdisciplinary and collaborative research between the law school and other departments or external institutions.
- Work with the Associate Dean for Administration and Assistant Dean for Finance to ensure financial compliance and accurate research financial projections.
- Assist faculty in developing and submitting competitive research proposals, ensuring compliance with federal and university grant guidelines.
- Represent the law school on university-wide research committees and with external stakeholders.
- Implement research aspects of the law school’s strategic plan, driving innovation and growth in faculty research initiatives.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A doctorate in law, with a research record commensurate with the rank of senior associate professor or full professor.
- Significant experience managing large-scale research programs, centers, or complex research grants.
- Familiarity with federal grant compliance, financial management, and research proposal evaluation.
- Proven ability to mentor faculty and foster innovative research opportunities.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with a track record of advancing academic research.
