Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing and two years of clinical experience are required.
  • A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • A current Registered Nurse license in good standing with the State of Michigan is required.
  • Advanced nursing-specific certification is preferred.
  • Department-specific certifications such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, or Advanced Cardiac Life Support may be required.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC is required within six months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring for applicable Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum units.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, conflict-resolution ability, and ability to work as a team leader are required.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability is required.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and demonstrate accountability for assignments is required.
  • Ability to use job-relevant software such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Visio is required.
  • Ability to organize and analyze data is required.
  • Fluent spoken and written English is required.
  • Ability to interpret regulatory standards and assess their impact on the organization is required.
  • Ability to lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or equivalent pushing, pulling, or material-handling effort is required.
Responsibilities
  • Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of care.
  • Conduct or facilitate audits for accreditation, regulatory requirements, and organizational standards.
  • Coordinate day-to-day unit operations, including patient placements and staff assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel and ensure appropriate utilization of personnel.
  • Coordinate department staff schedules with manager input as needed.
  • Adjust department staffing daily to meet staffing needs, including managing volume changes and replacing call-ins.
  • Facilitate staff attendance at organizational committees and meetings.
  • Manage staffing levels to help the department achieve its budget.
  • Project staffing needs and assist in creating a staffing plan with the manager or director.
  • Approve or deny paid time off.
  • Follow organizational staffing policies and communicate with staff about scheduling requests and issues.
  • Act as a clinical expert resource, mentor staff, maintain positive relationships, and build teamwork across the healthcare team.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Provide input into guidelines, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Act as the first responder for clinical and service-recovery issues.
  • Serve as a resource for staff questions about job performance and departmental processes.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to personnel accountable to the nurse manager.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to staff regarding job performance and immediate performance coaching as needed.
  • Monitor staff performance on a day-to-day basis.
  • Work with the manager to develop Personal Development Plans, including follow-up and mentoring.
  • Act as a role model, coach, and mentor to staff.
  • Evaluate personnel performance and collate peer input for evaluations.
  • Communicate staff behavior and performance issues to the manager as necessary.
  • Participate in the employee discipline process with manager notification for attendance, behavioral, and performance issues.
  • Participate in employee evaluations at the manager's discretion.
  • Co-facilitate planning and conduct shared-governance meetings and mentor the shared-governance staff chair.
  • Facilitate charge-nurse and other unit meetings and report to the nurse manager.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including assisting the manager with interviews.
  • Create and support an environment that encourages and values innovation and creativity.
  • Serve as a clinical liaison with staff, physicians, management, and internal and external customers.
  • Maintain continuity of day-to-day unit leadership and ensure unit standards are maintained.
  • Maintain a safe environment of care, meet quality standards, and implement and monitor processes.

  • Formal or informal leadership experience is preferred.
