Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid US driver’s license and eligibility to be authorized and approved as a university driver based on the Driver Administration Policy
  • Must meet State of Maine requirement for driving vehicles: drivers of vehicles carrying campers must be at least 21 years of age and approved by the camp’s auto liability insurer’s agent
Responsibilities
  • Lead and support environmental and outdoor learning programs for youth at Tanglewood 4-H Camp
  • Teach environmental education, canoe trips, campfires, and community building
  • Work as part of a team of educators to provide Open Air Classroom programs, day and overnight programming, and support for school programs
  • Reside on-site with campers in shared housing during Summer appointment; have structured time off each week
  • Serve in various roles during summer programs including program coordinators (unit leaders or as the health care provider), overnight camp educators, day camp educators, and/or leadership instructors/trip leaders
  • Lead groups outdoors over various terrains with 35+ lbs. packs for extended days and assist in carrying canoes (85 lb.) with others in various weather conditions
  • Demonstrate responsible and safe decision-making to ensure secure and enjoyable programming
  • Possess motivation to work with children of all ages in a high-energy outdoor setting
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic First Aid/CPR certification
  • Lifeguard Certification
  • Wilderness First Aid or First Responder Certification
  • Small Craft Water Safety Certification
  • Experiential education experience with youth, preferably outdoors
  • Knowledge of ecological concepts and natural history
  • Ability to lead groups with equipment and endure varied weather and terrains including 35+ lbs packs and 85 lb canoes
  • Degree in environmental science, education, adventure education, childcare, or willingness to learn and self-teach new skills
  • Experience facilitating team-building initiatives and course activities
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions while managing participant needs
