Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a similar field is required.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering is required.
  • At least 10 years of experience in satellite antenna, terminal, and/or satellite system design is required.
  • Experience with electronically steerable antenna design and modem integration is advantageous.
  • Experience deploying electronically steerable antenna designs is advantageous.
  • Experience simulating, designing, and testing electronically steerable antennas for satellite communications is required.
  • Knowledge of flat-panel antenna integration approaches with various modem technologies is required.
  • Familiarity with standardized protocols for antenna control, modem interoperability, and communications is required.
  • Expertise in Ka-band antenna technologies for mobile land, aeronautical, maritime, and fixed applications is required.
  • Understanding of satellite modems, hub technology, and radio-frequency equipment is required.
  • A strong foundation in electromagnetism and array antenna architecture is required.
  • Experience selecting radio-frequency integrated circuits, beamforming, and manufacturing processes for array antennas is required.
  • Knowledge of antenna-control techniques for beam steering and beam-shape control is required.
  • Ability to make design trade-offs among performance, cost, and power consumption is required.
  • Experience working with antenna and modem technology suppliers and vendors is required.
  • Fluency in written and oral English is required.
  • The candidate must qualify for a government clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Develop technical requirements for low-Earth-orbit constellation user-terminal antenna technology, including modem integration and antenna architecture.
  • Support the definition of user-terminal antenna and modem requirements and evaluate vendor-developed technologies.
  • Interface with and evaluate vendor-proposed terminal designs for performance, reliability, and manufacturability, and review antenna-to-modem integration strategies for future user-terminal designs.
  • Recommend modifications or new user-terminal designs to achieve cost, performance, and reliability targets.
  • Identify tests to validate system assumptions using antenna and user-terminal prototypes.
  • Help develop supporting documentation, test requirements, and a compliance matrix for the user-terminal type-approval process.
  • Lead the evaluation of antenna technologies, including electronically steerable antennas and novel electronically steerable antenna technologies.
  • Stay current with satellite and fifth-generation antenna-design technologies and open Antenna Management Interface Protocol and open Broadband Modem Interface Protocol standards.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Telesat secures $1.7B Arctic satellite contract for Lightspeed network

Telesat's subsidiary has secured a C$2.3 billion, 15-year Arctic connectivity contract under Canada's Enhanced Satellite Communications Project. The agreement will fund 69 Lightspeed satellites.
