Requirements
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering design and analysis experience is required, including at least 2 years providing engineering support to production hardware in the form of resolving technical issues and implementing design for manufacturing changes
  • Excellent fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems such as static structures and heat transfer
  • Relevant hands-on experience in the form of parts designed for high loads and extreme environments
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or another relevant field
  • Demonstrated record of design of mechanical components beyond desktop scale. E.g. high power (MW+), high mass (ton+), high force (MN+)
  • Familiarity with all steps in the design process with an emphasis on creativity, simplicity, and execution
  • Be self-motivated, committed to self-growth, and exhibit excellent problem-solving skills
  • Perform activities such as sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
Responsibilities
  • Act autonomously as the primary owner of SPARC and ARC current feeder (FEED) hardware, ensuring designs are completed, validated, procured, built, and installed correctly and on time
  • Produce new and iterate on existing design concepts, using a deep understanding of physics, structural mechanics, and analysis techniques for both metallics and composites
  • Liaise with partner teams such as R&D, analysis, manufacturing, and procurement to drive completion of program milestones in a timely fashion
  • Diagnose issues on the production and assembly line and provide path forward based on known understanding of hardware
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation to serve as design documentation and validation of final SPARC and ARC FEED systems
Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Commonwealth Fusion Systems

View

Commonwealth Fusion Systems focuses on developing fusion energy as a clean and sustainable power source. The company utilizes advanced magnet technology, created in partnership with MIT, to build smaller and more affordable fusion systems called tokamaks. These devices use magnetic fields to confine plasma, making them an efficient method for achieving fusion. Currently, CFS is manufacturing high-temperature superconducting magnets and constructing SPARC, which aims to be the first commercially viable net energy fusion machine. The success of SPARC will lead to the development of ARC, the first fusion power plant. CFS differentiates itself from competitors by its commitment to scientific integrity and a mission-driven approach, aiming to provide cost-competitive fusion energy to help combat climate change.
