Requirements
  • A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.
  • At least 3 years of mechanical and/or product design experience in consumer electronics or electro-mechanical products is required.
  • Strong proficiency with PTC Creo is required, including the ability to independently produce release-ready part and assembly computer-aided design, drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Strong fundamentals in plastics and metals, injection molding, tooling iteration, tolerance and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and high-volume manufacturing considerations are required.
  • Willingness to travel to support suppliers and contract manufacturers as needed is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own and drive product-level mechanical system architecture, including internal layout, part breakdown strategy, construction strategy, fastening and joining strategy, datum scheme, tolerance strategy, and serviceability.
  • Partner with Industrial Design to translate design intent into manufacturable mechanical solutions while balancing aesthetics, usability, reliability, schedule, and cost.
  • Collaborate with Electrical and Hardware Engineering to define mechanical interfaces and constraints, including printed circuit board outline and mounting, connector and input/output access, assembly datums, fastener strategy, and key keep-outs.
  • Support thermal and electromagnetic interference-related mechanical integration, including thermal conduction and heat-spreading paths, shielding strategy implications, gasket interfaces, conductive coatings, and grounding and contact reliability across tolerance and assembly variation.
  • Create and release three-dimensional computer-aided design models, two-dimensional drawings, specifications, and preliminary and released bills of materials using PTC Creo Parametric; apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and tolerance stack-up on critical interfaces.
  • Plan and support prototype builds and validation, including engineering validation testing, design validation testing, and production validation testing; define build objectives and acceptance criteria, evaluate fit and function, cosmetics, key dimensions, and assembly robustness, and drive issue closure through subsequent builds.
  • Lead supplier and toolmaker engagement, including tooling kickoffs and T0, T1, and subsequent iterations; coordinate mold tuning and dimensional and assembly issue closure with suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • Drive design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly decision-making across injection molding, computer numerical control machining, sheet metal, die casting, and secondary operations and finishes, including cost and schedule trade-offs.
  • Own documentation quality and change discipline by releasing and maintaining drawings and bills of materials and driving Engineering Change Orders with clear revision control and supplier communication.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective actions for mechanical issues found during builds, in production, or from field returns.
  • Mentor early-career engineers through design reviews, best practices, and hands-on coaching.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with compact, high-volume consumer electronics such as routers, mesh nodes, gateways, or similar products.
  • Experience working directly with contract manufacturers and toolmakers and closing issues through T0, T1, and subsequent tooling iterations.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping, including three-dimensional printing, computer numerical control prototypes, soft tooling, and hands-on build and debug support.
  • Familiarity with structural simulation, finite element analysis, and vibration and shock fundamentals.
  • Exposure to product lifecycle management and product data management tools and controlled release workflows.
