Responsibilities
  • Monitor rhythm strip display/heart beats and electrocardiograms (EKG) of patients on the Telemetry unit and document arrhythmias and immediately report findings to the unit, Registered Nurse and rapid response team as needed.
  • Observe and interpret Heart Monitors.
  • The bulk of a monitor technician's work day is observing and interpreting the cardiac monitors of patients on the Telemetry units and alerting the Registered Nursing staff of all changes and becoming familiar with each patient’s cardiac rhythm by running a rhythm strip of each patient at the beginning of each tour and when changes in rhythm occur.
  • Monitor technicians perform EKG’s on patients if needed.
  • If a monitor tech notices any changes in the patient’s heart readings or EKGs, they report them immediately to a Registered Nurse or Doctor via emergency red phone.
  • The Monitor Technician will print a strip that is timed and dated.
  • Update Patient Records in Meditech as well as placing an EKG strip in the patients chart; RN will co-sign EKG entries.
  • Maintain Equipment by cleaning their equipment, including EKG machines and heart monitors, and by alerting the proper Point of Contact when their equipment needs maintenance.
  • Monitor Technicians are able to recognize and differentiate irregular patterns as they relate to the standard rhythm of a patient’s heartbeat.
  • Charged with monitoring up to 40 patients during a single shift; the Monitor Technician is able to multi-task.
  • Recognize abnormalities in patient heart readings.
  • Written and verbal communication skills are necessary to be successful as a Monitor Technician.
  • Knowledge of hospital equipment as well as computer software.
  • Notify the unit if lead failure occurs; troubleshoot malfunctions of Central Monitor and notify repair service as needed.
  • Assist the healthcare provider in patient examination as requested including checking patient vital signs, prepares and maintains examination and treatment areas, prepares patients for exam/procedures, collects and processes specimens, applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control, performs and documents EKGs.
  • Perform phlebotomy, document of elective health record within the scope of responsibility, maintain medical inventory in treatment areas.
  • Pursues appropriate continuing medical education.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality & adheres to all safety, emergency, and infection control policies and reports any unsafe conditions
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • New York State certification as Advanced Emergency Medical Technician-Clinical or Paramedic preferred

St. John's Riverside Hospital St. John's Riverside Hospital, a leading community-based healthcare provider in Yonkers, New York, recently experienced a data breach that potentially exposed personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) of at least 2,238 individuals across the U.S. According to a disclosure filed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Nov. 14, 2025, the breach originated from unauthorized access to a limited number of employee email accounts. The incident was discovered in September 2025, when the hospital detected suspicious activity involving the distribution of phishing emails and an attempt to reroute payment funds. The compromised email accounts contained a range of sensitive information. For some individuals, the exposed data included personally identifiable information (PII) such as name, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license or state identification number and financial account number. For others, protected health information (PHI) was involved, including health insurance details, medical condition information, treatment provider name, medical record number, treatment cost information and diagnosis or treatment information. St. John's Riverside Hospital's response. Upon discovering the breach, St. John's Riverside Hospital immediately took steps to secure its systems. The hospital changed passwords, revoked session tokens, reset multifactor authentication and engaged data security and privacy professionals to investigate the incident. The unauthorized activity was contained and remediated, and the hospital conducted a thorough analysis to identify affected individuals.
