Requirements
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from American Heart Association.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (Los Angeles City) with the requirement to obtain within 30 days of hire if no card is on hire date and maintained by renewal before expiration (Required within LA City only).
Responsibilities
  • Ensure patient charts are prepared prior to appointment including x-rays and pertinent lab work, and make arrangements to obtain any special equipment needed.
  • Set up exam rooms and assist physician with exams as needed; monitor patient flow.
  • Maintain files and records; oversee equipment and office supply inventory; photocopy, collate, fax, distribute, mail; read and prioritize incoming mail; handle or route as appropriate.
  • Ensure that physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented by the appropriate staff.
  • Schedule patient appointments; answer general questions; obtain authorizations and pre-authorizations for patient care services; schedule appointments with ancillary departments or other care providers as needed; maintain master calendar for physician(s).
  • Review and code charge slips for patient care services rendered and/or surgeries; develop supporting documentation for insurance claims and submit claims to insurance carriers.
  • Assist physicians with minor orthopedic clinical procedures including staple removal, suture removal, and wound care.
  • Submit workers compensation and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) requests; relay disability status to adjusters and nurse case managers.
  • Return patient phone calls in a timely manner per departmental policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of experience in acute care setting (preferred).
  • Spanish language skills (preferred).
  • Knowledge of orthopedic medical terminology (preferred).
  • Familiarity with word processing, IDX, GECB, COR Schuynet, Cerner, ProSolv, EPF and scheduling software (preferred).
