Job Description:
The Principal Consultant is responsible for all phases of a Vertex tax technology implementation, including project management, requirements definition, solution design, system configuration, testing, knowledge transfer, and development of custom documentation.
This role is accountable for delivering services and project deliverables in support of the deployment of Vertex tax technology products. In this role, you will identify and analyze client implementation requirements, manage expectations, and provide recommendations, alternatives, risks and benefits, and overall guidance during all phases of the implementation.
You are required to work collaboratively and build relationships with client tax and IT staff and other 3rd party advisors and consulting resources on the client engagement. This role requires significant subject matter expertise in both Vertex applications and industry best practices. The role also requires the ability to effectively identify and deliver additional tax process solutions and other value-added services that contribute to Vertex’s revenue and profit objectives.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently manages all phases of Vertex projects including review and analysis of client requirements, solution design and build, and testing.
- Oversees and collaborates with less experienced Vertex Consultants on implementation tasks while serving as Project Manager on multiple concurrent projects and provides guidance, direction, and resource allocation in support of the Statement of Work and project plan.
- Manages the day-to-day client relationship and expectations.
- Ensures high degree of customer satisfaction by serving as the main point of contact and initial point of escalation for issues and concerns.
- Collaborates with Business Development (Solution Sales) in proposing statements of work including scope, level of effort, and expectations.
- Assists with the on-boarding, training, and development of new team members
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of implementation/consulting, customer service and vendor practices.
- Knowledge of software development methodologies and implementation/testing techniques appropriate to Windows, Legacy and/or client server database applications.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, work in a team environment and understand the be responsive to project and customer needs.
- Ability to adapt and function effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment, while working under deadlines.
- Solid analytical, presentation, troubleshooting and design skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- ERP knowledge a plus

- Has or has gained knowledge and understanding of the Vertex business, our industry and marketplace.
- Willingness to work overtime, holidays, and weekends based on business need.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline
- Fifteen (15) plus years of experience in Vertex Tax / Technology Implementations and Project
- Management, with strong knowledge of one or more host application/Vertex Partner software applications.
- Has in-depth tax application experience working with public accounting firms and/or fortune 1000 companies in the area of transaction tax (e.g., multi-state/VAT).
- Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
