Requirements
  • The applicant must be licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri.
  • The applicant must maintain current Registered Nurse licensure and certifications.
  • The applicant must maintain current Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • The applicant must complete annual tuberculosis screening and influenza vaccination requirements.
  • The applicant must complete annual ethics, safety, information security, abuse and neglect, blood-borne pathogens, competency and service-specific training requirements.
  • The applicant must be able to work irregular hours and handle emergency and crisis situations.
  • The applicant must perform occasional prolonged standing and walking and occasionally lift, position, push or transfer patients.
  • The applicant must follow safety, infection control, standard precaution, hand hygiene and hazardous-waste procedures.
  • The applicant must provide age-appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients.
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and reassessments, including admission, transfer and post-operative or post-invasive-procedure assessments.
  • Document assessment findings, patient education and discharge needs accurately and completely.
  • Establish, coordinate and evaluate patient care plans using assessment data, diagnoses, laboratory data, tests, procedures, physician orders, protocols and standards of care.
  • Identify short- and long-term patient goals and formulate nursing interventions to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Incorporate disease-specific evidence-based practice into nursing care plans and documentation.
  • Provide and document nursing interventions based on assessed patient needs, the plan of care and changes in patient status.
  • Collaborate with health team members to coordinate the daily plan of care for assigned patients.
  • Provide, coordinate and communicate patient care, including accurate handoff communication reports.
  • Administer and document medications accurately according to policies and procedures.
  • Monitor, maintain and document intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition accurately according to policies and procedures.
  • Complete referrals and request consultations for patient or family needs, equipment or information as indicated by assessment data.
  • Provide patient and family education and discharge planning according to documentation guidelines and protocols.
  • Clarify physician orders and acknowledge and implement them accurately and promptly in the medical record.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and treatments or delegate care to the appropriate care partner.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and clinical parameters, take appropriate nursing action and report significant changes to physicians and others as indicated.
  • Apply infection control practices and maintain a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment.
  • Provide specialized care for patients at high risk for injury, including restraint care, pain management and abuse assessment.
  • Assess pain, implement pain-management techniques, incorporate patient and family input and evaluate the effectiveness of pain interventions.
  • Recognize and report signs of possible abuse or neglect and take appropriate action to support patient safety.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of care, patient education, treatments and procedures, and modify the plan of care as indicated.
  • Identify problems, gather pertinent data, suggest solutions, communicate through appropriate lines of authority and work toward resolution.
  • Report variations from care or treatment according to occurrence-reporting policies and procedures.
  • Participate in committees, shared governance, work teams, unit-based practice councils, performance-improvement activities and nursing research.
  • Contribute to nursing unit goals, quality indicators, data collection, performance-improvement plans and evaluation of results.
  • Orient or precept new employees when required and provide supervision and teaching to students and new staff nurses.
  • Function as a resource for coworkers, patients, families, medical staff and other healthcare team members.
  • Delegate care and other activities to appropriate team members and communicate each patient's plan of care precisely and professionally.
  • Provide timely, high-quality, courteous and respectful service to patients and families.
  • Communicate effectively, maintain confidentiality, explain procedures and education, answer call lights promptly and address patient and family concerns.
  • Use resources efficiently, document chargeable supplies and equipment, prioritize responsibilities and minimize waste.
  • Provide age-appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients based on age-specific assessment, communication and service needs.
  • Maintain thorough and legible patient-care documentation, complete purposeful rounding and provide handoff reports before leaving the unit.
  • Maintain equipment and clean, organized nursing, patient and work areas.
  • Follow hospital policies and procedures, maintain required licensure and certifications, and complete mandatory education by assigned deadlines.
