Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- An aptitude for completing detailed technical procedures with a high degree of accuracy is required.
- Effective communication skills are required.
- The ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment is required.
- The ability to maintain a positive approach to problem solving and demonstrate flexibility in meeting new challenges is required.
- A CPT I or CPT II California Phlebotomy Certificate is required.
- Successful completion and maintenance of a Basic Life Support Certificate from the American Heart Association is required.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to a safe, organized, and efficient workplace by complying with established and departmental policies.
- Perform assigned tasks in accordance with established procedures and policies to provide accurate and timely test results.
- Evaluate current work systems applicable to job duties and suggest or support positive changes to improve patient care.
- Maintain current competency files and accept accountability for professional development.
- Document training for laboratory technicians on proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, storage, and factors influencing test results.
- Participate in departmental and inter-departmental Quality Improvement Program activities, including orientation, education, and quality planning.
- Order phlebotomy and office supplies, distribute supplies to departments, and organize stock.
- Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements for moderate-complexity testing.
- Cooperate with laboratory personnel and hospital staff to ensure efficient reporting of laboratory results.
- Load samples onto analytical analyzers where legally designated or permitted, including culture specimens in microbiology where permitted.
- Train and educate laboratory technicians regarding turnaround time, new laboratory policies, and procedures.
- Assign morning rounds to ensure timed, STAT, and urgent draws meet policy requirements.
- Assist with MIDAS reporting and request CDM for new laboratory tests.
- Ensure laboratory technician coverage for meals and breaks and arrange coverage for unscheduled absences.
- Fill in for pathology technician and front-office technician duties when necessary.
- Complete annual competency performance reports for all laboratory technicians.
- Resolve questions and errors in patient test orders and result reports.
- Resolve supply issues such as manufacturer shortages and back orders.
- Provide feedback to the Laboratory Director for laboratory performance improvement.
- Assist the Clinical Laboratory Scientist with technical and clerical functions under supervision.
- Collect, process, and distribute blood specimens for testing using standard techniques.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures and clerical duties, including supply ordering and inventory management for phlebotomy and laboratory office supplies.
- Train new employees and manage the laboratory technician schedule.
Desired Qualifications
- An associate degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or an equivalent field is preferred but not required.
- Three years of experience working in a clinical laboratory or anatomic pathology is preferred.
