Requirements
  • A Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) certification is required.
  • At least 18 months of dialysis experience is required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid Patient Care Technician national certification or state-specific certification recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is required, along with any applicable state licensure, education, and training.
  • One to two years of related experience is required.
  • The employee must be able to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation.
  • The employee must be able to stand for prolonged periods and bend over.
  • The employee must be able to occasionally assist with moving machines and equipment weighing up to 200 pounds and lift chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 pounds to heights of 5 feet.
Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care under the supervision of the facility registered nurse for assigned patients in the acute setting.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment and participate in quality enhancement, quality assessment, performance improvement, patient satisfaction, and process improvement activities.
  • Support Total Area Productivity goals.
  • Set up and prime equipment for hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, and peritoneal dialysis therapies when documented competency and proficiency are established.
  • Welcome assigned patients, inquire about their well-being since their last treatment, and report complaints or observations to the registered nurse.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Obtain and record pre-treatment, post-treatment, and intradialytic vital signs and weights.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report cannulation difficulties or unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for the ultrafiltration goal, treatment time, sodium modeling, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety alarms, including narrow venous limits, are enabled.
  • Record accurate and timely vital signs and treatment parameters on the hemodialysis treatment sheet.
  • Initiate renal replacement treatment according to prescribed orders, including setting blood flow and dialysate flow rates, or administer peritoneal dialysis as prescribed by the attending nephrologist.
  • Collect and label specimens and ensure their timely delivery to the laboratory.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, monitor patient responses, and report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion and perform all functions necessary to discontinue treatment and complete documentation.
  • Document interventions for unusual patient status and the patient’s response to each intervention.
  • Monitor arterial and venous pressures during treatment, intervene as needed, and document and report unusual findings.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures.
  • Evaluate patients before termination of venous access, obtain standing and sitting blood pressures, achieve hemostasis, and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Evaluate patients before discharge and report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Perform and record pre- and post-dialysis evaluations, weights, and vital signs.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations and attend meetings when required.
