Requirements
- A college or university degree from an accredited school or college.
- Knowledge and skills developed through education and at least 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
- Current or eligible State of Illinois licensure or registration.
- Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office.
- Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
Responsibilities
- Support surgical clinics and the Breast Center at multiple locations, including Crown Point, Hyde Park in Chicago, and other sites as needed.
- Prepare weekly Breast Conference write-ups.
- Assist with counseling for basic genetic testing and work with the Breast Center nurse to perform or order genetic testing.
- Assist in plastic surgery procedures, including mastectomies, breast reconstruction, tissue expanders, breast augmentations, abdominoplasties, and general plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery.
- Perform General Surgery procedures in clinic, including cyst or seroma aspirations and abscess drainages.
- Prepare clinic charts by obtaining IOE, outside records, and pre-charting.
- Assist physicians and provide independent clinical care.
- Assist the team in preparing for and expediting the start of surgery in the operating room.
- Provide operating-room first-assist support and assist with perioperative care.
- Provide preoperative and postoperative instructions and facilitate discharge planning.
- Maintain departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety standards, environmental standards, and infection control standards.
- Assess patient health status and needs in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Perform specified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Assist inpatient and outpatient teams in developing and implementing comprehensive plans of care.
- Follow through in the outpatient setting by communicating with appropriate healthcare providers to ensure proper care and follow-up.
- Function as a professional role model for staff while providing expert inpatient and outpatient care.
- Use appropriate patient-care protocols addressing the physical and psychological needs of adult and geriatric patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Collaborate with care team members and multidisciplinary team members to provide direct inpatient and outpatient care.
- Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
- Participate in the development, review, and evaluation of Surgical First Assist procedures.
- Keep clinical knowledge current by reading professional literature and attending educational conferences.
- Provide cross-coverage to other General and Plastic Surgery services as needed.
- Design patient education programs that provide information needed for informed healthcare and treatment decisions.
- Evaluate goals and outcomes based on benefit versus burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family, and organization.
- Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
- An advanced degree or equivalent from an accredited school or college of nursing, or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.
- Clinical experience in a related area of specialty.
- Current Advanced Practice Nurse license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive it by the start date.
- Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive it by the start date.
- Current Physician Assistant license or registration in the State of Illinois or eligibility to receive it by the start date.
- Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants by the start date.
- Ability to provide direct patient care independently under the direction of the supervising physician.
- Ability to perform detailed work and multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions.
- Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations.
- Ability to solve problems by applying mathematical or reasoning principles.
- Ability to train or lead others.
