Requirements
  • Maintain current knowledge of case management, utilization management, and discharge planning according to federal, state, and private insurance guidelines.
  • Efficiently use tools, resources, techniques, and systems to organize tasks and balance multiple priorities while completing work accurately and on time.
  • Develop financial screening criteria for potential adult blood and marrow transplant patients and determine eligibility for transplant financial clearance.
  • Access, analyze, and guide potential adult stem cell transplant candidates through the transplant financial process.
  • Ensure staff adherence to established policies and procedures related to business operations and correct noncompliant actions.
  • Schedule and register patients and donors in UChart according to established policies and procedures.
  • Obtain pre-certification and authorization from medical review insurance companies or designated payors and initiate Letters of Medical Necessity when requested.
  • Obtain required patient or guarantor signatures and counsel patients or surrogates about coverage benefits and financial responsibilities throughout the transplant process.
  • Determine patient eligibility for financial clearance for stem cell transplant using provided financial information.
  • Ensure accurate billing and collection of co-payments, co-insurance, deductibles, and non-covered amounts before procedures.
  • Address financial inquiries regarding patient accounts and coordinate with involved departments and outside healthcare entities.
Responsibilities
  • Review medical records for outpatient, observation, and inpatient admissions daily to determine medical necessity for admission and continued stay using established criteria.
  • Conduct continued patient reviews using criteria and third-party payer or insurance guidelines to determine the need for continued hospitalization.
  • Provide clinical data and information to contracted third-party payers within 24 hours of request to support continued reimbursement and avoid delays.
  • Interact and communicate with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to maximize resource utilization and resolve issues involving resource use, continued hospitalization, and discharge planning.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds to review care plans and treatment goals, facilitate cost-effective utilization of services, and ensure appropriate referrals are initiated.
  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians, team members, patients' payers, and administrators.
  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce length of stay and resource consumption and document the results.
  • Communicate patients at risk of losing insurance coverage through termination of benefits to the appropriate healthcare team members and facilitate discharge planning.
  • Ensure appropriate concurrent documentation to minimize inefficient resource utilization and prevent loss of reimbursement.
  • Review physician documentation and follow procedures to seek clarification of documentation related to diagnosis when needed.
  • Monitor compliance with established policies and procedures related to business operations and correct actions that are out of compliance.
  • Coordinate clinical appointments with nurses, physicians, physical therapists, and technicians to maximize access to the inpatient and outpatient blood and marrow transplant program.
  • Ensure accurate billing of hospital and professional services and establish systems to track compliance with collection requirements.
  • Consult with transplant coordinators and adult stem cell transplant attending physicians regarding transplant referral financial status for program approval or denial.
