Micron shares drop 4.2% despite HBM shortage giving pricing power

Micron Technology fell 4.2% to $984.62 on Thursday despite a global high-bandwidth memory shortage giving suppliers increased pricing power. Chinese AI chip companies have raised prices due to scarce HBM supplies, with Huawei's upcoming Ascend accelerator reportedly becoming 20% to 50% more expensive. The American memory chip producer reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion, up from $9.30 billion a year earlier. Adjusted free cash flow reached $18.3 billion, representing 44.1% of sales. Management expects approximately $50 billion in fourth-quarter revenue with an adjusted gross margin near 86%, implying a 20.6% sequential revenue increase. However, Micron's share price stands 56.92% above its GF Value estimate of $627.48, suggesting limited room for any cooling in AI demand or memory pricing.

Applied Materials vs. Micron Technology: Which chip stock is a better buy in 2026?

Applied Materials and Micron Technology represent two different entry points into the semiconductor industry. Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, whilst Micron produces memory and storage components. In fiscal year 2025, Applied Materials generated $28.4 billion in revenue, up 4%, with net income of $7 billion and a 25% net margin. The company maintains conservative leverage with a 0.3x debt-to-equity ratio and generated $5.7 billion in free cash flow. Micron reported stronger growth, with revenue reaching $37.4 billion, up 59% year-over-year. Net income was $8.5 billion with a 23% net margin, marking a recovery from prior losses. Both face concentration risks. Applied Materials derives 34% of revenue from two customers, whilst Micron's top ten customers account for half of sales, with 50% tied to data centres.

Micron offers Taiwan engineers $32K bonuses amid labor tensions and AI boom

Micron Technology is offering Taiwan engineers approximately $32,000 in cash plus equity awards as the AI-driven memory boom generates record profits. The compensation package aims to retain critical semiconductor talent and prevent labour disputes at one of Micron's key manufacturing hubs. The company employs about 15,000 people in Taiwan and has invested more than NT$1.6 trillion on the island. Unions representing roughly two-thirds of workers are pushing for a different compensation structure, including allocating 15% of operating profit to employee bonuses. Micron reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion, up from $9.30 billion a year earlier. The company guided for roughly $50 billion of fourth-quarter revenue with an approximately 86% gross margin. HBM4 is already shipping in high volume for its lead customer.

Micron closes gap on SK Hynix to 1.6 points in $155B DRAM market race

Micron Technology is closing in on SK Hynix for the second-place position in the global DRAM market, trailing by just 1.6 percentage points in Q2 2026. Micron's DRAM revenue grew 66% quarter-over-quarter to $36 billion, capturing a 23.3% market share, whilst SK Hynix held 24.9% with $38.6 billion in revenue. The gap between the two companies has narrowed rapidly from 7.5 percentage points in Q3 2025 to the current 1.6 points. However, Micron's gains came primarily from conventional DRAM rather than high-bandwidth memory (HBM), where its market share actually fell to 18% from 21%. SK Hynix maintains approximately half the HBM market, whilst Samsung leads overall DRAM with a 39.4% share. Global DRAM revenue reached nearly $155 billion in Q2 2026.

Micron hits $1,000 after 662% rally on record 84.9% margins and $100B HBM deals

Micron Technology closed at $1,000.26, up 662% over the past year, driven by high-bandwidth memory demand for AI infrastructure. The company reported record 84.9% gross margins in fiscal Q3 2026, with revenue of $41.46 billion, up 345.7% year-over-year, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $25.11. Analysts note Micron holds $100 billion in locked floor-price agreements tied to Nvidia's HBM4 demand. The memory chipmaker, the only US-based manufacturer in its category, guided fiscal Q4 revenue to $50 billion. Bulls project shares could reach $1,347 if HBM4E production accelerates. One analysis sets a price target of $979, slightly below current levels, with a hold recommendation at 90% confidence.
