Requirements
  • A high school diploma and two years of experience in health care delivery in positions such as Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Emergency Medical Technician, Medic or Corps Person, or two completed clinical semesters as a Nursing Student, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of a licensed nurse, provide patient care by performing basic and selected specialized procedures that contribute to patients’ well-being, comfort, and safety.
  • Participate in the delivery of patient care by performing basic and specialized physical and psychosocial interventions as defined by the Patient Care Technician Skill Inventory, including collecting and recording specimens and body fluids.
  • Under the direct supervision of a nurse, perform direct patient care affecting patients’ well-being, comfort, and safety.
  • Perform technical procedures and report findings to the nursing staff, including venipuncture for blood samples, electrocardiograms, electrode placement, and telemetry readings.
  • Collect patient data as defined by the Skill Inventory List and document the data on the appropriate flow sheets.
  • Collect specimens, perform basic tests, or send specimens to the appropriate laboratory for analysis according to hospital policies.
  • Attend to patients’ environmental needs by straightening belongings and offering comfort measures at the direction of the nurse.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities as directed by the nurse.
  • Orient patients and families to the unit and patient room, and provide copies of the Patients’ Bill of Rights as directed by the nurse.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the nurse to support unit functioning and patient-care delivery.
