Requirements
  • A PhD in computer science, software engineering, machine learning, or a related discipline is required.
  • At least two years of full-time professional experience engineering edge software systems in a research environment, or at least eight years of demonstrated experience leading the development and transition of innovative software engineering techniques into operational practice, is required.
  • Strong empirical research skills are required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Candidates must be able and willing to work onsite at the Software Engineering Institute office in Pittsburgh five days per week.
  • Candidates will be subject to a background investigation and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, mature, and prototype technologies and transition them to government and industry organizations.
  • Directly develop and apply work with customers while balancing short-term customer needs with long-term goals for solving complex technical challenges in tactical edge and artificial intelligence-enabled systems.
  • Represent technical work with customers, stakeholders, and the academic community.
  • Advance the Tactical Edge and Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Systems research agenda in edge software systems, including edge artificial intelligence in degraded, disconnected, intermittent, and limited environments; edge intelligence; the edge-to-cloud continuum; uncrewed/autonomous systems edge collaboration; and software engineering for artificial intelligence-enabled systems, including agentic artificial intelligence systems.
  • Advance and learn about artificial intelligence-assisted tools and processes that are changing the practice of software engineering.
  • Travel to sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings as needed, approximately 10% of the time.

  • Ability to work in teams with a variety of technical and organizational skills.
