Requirements
- High school or GED graduation is required.
- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required.
- Level II applicants must have at least one year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
- Level III applicants must have at least three years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
- Applicants for Levels II and III must meet the requirements in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document.
- Applicants must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions generally acquired through a high school education and medical assistant programming.
- Applicants must be able to perform heavy lifting and transport stretcher and wheelchair patients when required.
- Applicants must have working knowledge of sterile techniques, applicable special procedures, routine and special patient treatments, sanitation, personal hygiene, health and safety precautions, and infection control procedures.
- Applicants must demonstrate age-specific competencies, clinic preparation processes, registration, scheduling, charge posting, order entry, documentation, and communication of pertinent information.
- Applicants must have typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology.
- Applicants must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff.
Responsibilities
- Answer telephones and greet patients.
- Update and file patient medical records.
- Handle correspondence and complete new-patient and consultation paperwork.
- Schedule appointments and arrange laboratory services.
- Monitor and order clinic supplies and manage in-basket messaging.
- Take medical histories and record vital signs.
- Explain treatment procedures to patients and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
- Assist physicians and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests on the premises.
- Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments.
- Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and participation in the plan of care, and document this in the patient record.
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
- Authorize drug refills and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy as directed.
- Perform phlebotomy.
- Prepare patients for X-rays, tests, and procedures.
- Take electrocardiograms, remove sutures and staples, and change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
Desired Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred for Level I.
- Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is strongly preferred for Levels II and III.
- Phlebotomy is strongly recommended.
- One year of experience is provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.
- Applicants for Levels II and III should be able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively.
