Organization's Summary Statement:
Assistant Professor Dr. Maria Steenland is seeking a health data analyst (functional title) / Faculty Specialist (business title) to join a research project focused on the impact of recent state policies that have expanded public insurance to undocumented and recent immigrants before and after pregnancy. The protect team incudes expertise in health services research, impact evaluation, as well as maternal and reproductive health. The analyst will gain experience and skills in formulating policy questions, identifying measurable policy-relevant outcomes, and using administrative data to examine the impact of maternal and reproductive health policy changes. The position is in the department of Family Science in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park. Full or partial telework will be considered.
Physical Demands:
The employee will be required to perform routine office duties, lift boxes containing supplies and recruitment materials, and attend meetings in other buildings on campus. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to sit or stand at a desk for extended periods and to operate office equipment.
Preferences:
- Research interests related to maternal and reproductive health policy in the United States, for example: evaluating the impact of programs and policies (e.g. state insurance mandates, state contraceptive access policy, Medicaid policy) on maternal health outcomes.
- Familiarity with scientific writing for health policy and public health journals - Interest in effective knowledge translation to policymakers and public health decision makers
- Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative spirit

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., health policy, public health, statistics, epidemiology, economics, psychology, or related fields). Candidates with a BA/BS must have demonstrated evidence of strong skills in statistical analysis and coding (e.g., R, Stata, or SAS) and substantial previous work experience as a research analyst.
- Experience analyzing large-scale administrative datasets (e.g. state or national insurance claims data, HCUP NIS or SIDs)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in research projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience using the Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System (T-MSIS) Analytic Files (TAF) to examine maternal health outcomes
-Master’s or doctoral degree preferred in a relevant field (e.g., health policy, public health, statistics, epidemiology, economics, psychology, or related fields).

The initial appointment will be through one year, with the possibility to continue in the subsequent four years of the project
