Requirements
  • Be currently enrolled in a Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related physical science program at a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Be registered in a recognized co-op or internship program through an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada through Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid work permit.
  • Complete a medical and/or alcohol and drug test if the role is considered safety-sensitive.
  • Have foundational knowledge of chemistry, chemical systems, scientific testing, or analytical methods.
  • Be able to follow established testing procedures, standard operating procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Be able to maintain accurate laboratory records and manage multiple testing activities.
  • Be able to collect, organize, and interpret scientific data and communicate findings clearly.
  • Have a strong commitment to workplace safety, including the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and laboratory materials.
Responsibilities
  • Support research and development activities related to new and existing drilling fluid products and technologies.
  • Perform laboratory testing to evaluate product performance and support research initiatives.
  • Assist with developing, evaluating, and refining laboratory testing procedures and analytical methods.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control evaluations of standard and alternative drilling fluid products.
  • Complete drilling fluid testing and assist with preparing results and technical information for existing and prospective customers.
  • Prepare samples, solutions, and materials required for laboratory testing and experiments.
  • Collect, organize, and document experimental observations, testing results, and other laboratory data.
  • Analyze laboratory data and assist with preparing technical reports, summaries, spreadsheets, and presentations.
  • Maintain laboratory records, including laboratory notebooks, electronic files, spreadsheets, photographs, and supporting documentation.
  • Review scientific literature, technical documents, standard operating procedures, and other reference materials to support assigned projects and laboratory activities.
  • Support the receipt, login, labelling, storage, tracking, and appropriate disposal of laboratory samples.
  • Perform routine cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory workspace.
  • Complete Field Level Hazard Assessments and participate in hazard identification, near-miss reporting, and incident reporting where applicable.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures, safe work practices, chemical handling requirements, and SECURE’s health and safety standards.
  • Accurately record project hours and other required project information.
  • Support additional laboratory, quality assurance and quality control, and research projects as assigned.
  • Take on increasing responsibility for assigned laboratory testing and research activities under the guidance of experienced team members as technical knowledge and experience develop.
Desired Qualifications
  • Chemistry is the preferred academic discipline; students pursuing Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, or another science-based program with a significant laboratory component may also be considered.
  • Availability for a long-term internship or co-op placement.
  • Previous academic, co-op, internship, or employment experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory practices, chemical handling, sample preparation, or laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, reliable, and well-documented laboratory results.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within a technical team.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and interest in applied research, product development, and laboratory science.
  • Willingness to learn new testing techniques, laboratory equipment, and technical processes.

GFL to acquire Secure Waste for $6.4B, adding 80+ facilities across Western Canada

GFL Environmental has agreed to acquire Secure Waste Infrastructure for $6.4 billion, expanding its presence in Western Canada and North Dakota. The deal includes over 80 locations comprising 12 landfills, 55 waste treatment facilities, 12 recycling facilities, 98 injection wells and five transfer stations. Secure shareholders can choose $24.75 in cash, 0.4195 GFL subordinate voting shares, or a combination for each share held. Cash payments are capped at 20% of the total consideration, with GFL shares limited to 80%. GFL founder and CEO Patrick Dovigi said the acquisition will densify the company's Western Canada footprint and enhance its ability to offer comprehensive waste management services. The transaction requires shareholder approval and is expected to close in the second half of 2025.
