Requirements
  • One year of post-secondary education and one year of related materials processing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as a Registered Central Sterile Processing Distribution Technician is preferred.
  • Computer experience and knowledge of medical terminology are preferred.
  • Candidates hired on or after January 1, 2014, must pass a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians and obtain and maintain an approved central service technician credential within eighteen months of hire.
  • Twelve continuing education unit credits must be obtained annually for candidates hired on or after January 1, 2014; candidates hired on or before December 31, 2013, must obtain ten continuing education unit credits annually.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts for operating rooms, ambulatory care facilities, hospital units, and research clinics.
  • Operate sterilizers; prepare and dispense sterile items; inspect and stock supplies; and inspect, adjust, clean, and service instruments and equipment before issuing them.
  • Select packaging and sterilization methods, examine instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function, assemble instrument sets according to ESI software protocols, document tray contents, and package trays and instruments according to established procedures.
  • Operate steam sterilizers, monitor time, pressure, and temperature, load and unload sterilizers, distribute processed items, and perform simple sterilizer maintenance.
  • Prepare cultures, review processed test packs, interpret results, and complete required sterility documentation.
  • Check and adjust medical equipment according to procedures, and refer equipment that does not meet specifications for repair.
  • Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment, prevent cross-contamination, operate decontamination equipment, clean and disinfect equipment and work areas, and handle infectious waste and linen according to established protocols.
  • Receive and store supplies, verify deliveries against requisitions, document stock received, report discrepancies, maintain inventory par levels, fill and deliver surgical supply orders, and maintain equipment inventory and service records.
  • Perform quality assurance checks on sterile supplies and instruments, stock levels, sterility dates, procedure-cart accuracy, biological indicators, and sterilizer load sheets.
