Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • The candidate must meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • The candidate must hold all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • The candidate must complete the organization’s dialysis training program successfully for continued employment.
  • The candidate must complete CPR certification successfully for continued employment.
  • The employee must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered if needed.
  • The employee must be able to perform heavy lifting and patient movement, assist with ambulation, stand for prolonged periods, bend over, push or pull equipment, and lift solutions weighing up to 40 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist with patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, and monitor and document patients’ responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled and perform required dialysis machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding Testing.
  • Record accurate and timely treatment data, vital signs, treatment parameters, and required documentation in the designated clinical application and hemodialysis treatment records.
  • Report significant patient information, changes in condition, and unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and coordinate laboratory specimens according to laboratory specifications.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and environmentally sound work area and immediately clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectant.
  • Prepare, organize, and use supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent wastage.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient-care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Prepare initial patient charts, compile admission paperwork, and prepare or print laboratory requisitions.
  • Assist with infection-control audits, support adherence to infection-control practices, and reinforce infection-control education for patients and families under appropriate direction.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care information for new patients and help them understand home dialysis products and treatment options.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to the care plan.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit.
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and assist with coordinating transitions to the patient’s chosen modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System.

  • Previous patient-care experience in a hospital setting or related facility is preferred.
