Requirements
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related engineering or quantitative science field, and two years of experience in biomedical laboratory research, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Coursework in calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, as well as strong Matlab and Python programming skills.
  • Experience in biomechanics, physiology, and/or neuroscience research.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse, interdisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of computational imaging data formats such as MHA and NIFTI.
  • Experience with public databases such as TCGA, TCIA, and IDC.
  • Familiarity with APIs, database querying, and data management.
  • Experience with computational imaging software packages such as ITK-SNAP, 3D Slicer, PyTorch, and PyRadiomics, and the ability to adapt and implement new software as necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Under minimal supervision, perform defined research and laboratory tasks requiring engineering knowledge according to prescribed protocols.
  • Integrate hardware and software for custom laboratory equipment and interface with engineering support at companies.
  • Apply or adapt engineering research techniques in experiments, including designing and constructing electrical and mechanical parts for research purposes.
  • Select and use specialized software for electrical circuit and mechanical design, construct parts, and work with engineering companies to develop designs and ensure that design specifications are met.
  • Set up and perform experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Purchase adequate supplies for performing experiments.
  • Maintain appropriate certifications for performing experiments, including IRB, IACUC protocols, and other laboratory certifications.
  • Assist in protocol design for experimental and computational studies.
  • Investigate and propose alternative experimental and computational approaches for consideration by a principal investigator, including hardware and software development.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Demonstrate and train others in research techniques, including laboratory equipment, data analysis, and computerized methodologies.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine repair and maintenance of equipment and computers with minimal supervision.
  • Develop data processing and analysis procedures using specialized engineering software such as Matlab, LabView, Python, Vicon Workstation, and SolidWorks, applying matrix algebra, calculus, differential equations, Fourier analysis, and other engineering analysis techniques; create accompanying graphs, tables, and other data compilations as needed.
  • Review literature for related research developments and techniques and compile findings.
  • Monitor experimental and data analysis processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Record study results, compile and analyze data, and prepare engineering analyses for plotting, statistical analysis, and visualization.
  • Assist in preparing figures and text for grants and papers.
  • Co-author or co-present research with the principal investigator as a collaborating author when required.
  • Analyze large radiographic imaging or digital pathology datasets.
  • Manage complex databases.
  • Conduct advanced data analytics, map and generate result summaries and methodologic documentation appropriate for the project.
  • Test and develop novel computational approaches for research goals, particularly in medical imaging artificial intelligence research.
  • Contribute to dissemination efforts.
  • Interpret statistical analyses and results, develop predictions, and make recommendations on overall study design.
  • Adapt and implement new software as necessary.
