Requirements
  • Ideally, you have experience in a high-impact role at a high-growth, early-stage, technology company or have started a company of your own
Responsibilities
  • Embed with Portfolio Companies: Join a Shaper-backed startup for a high-priority tour of duty—owning special projects, stepping in during moments of scale, or helping unlock critical growth levers. You’ll be deployed where your impact is most needed.
  • Tackle Ambiguous, High-Leverage Work: Lead projects with unclear ownership and high business value—standing up new products, streamlining operations, building financial models, or testing go-to-market strategies.
  • Cross-Company Exposure: Rotate across multiple portfolio companies to rapidly build pattern recognition and context around what makes early-stage startups succeed (or fail).
  • Pressure Test and Scale Ideas: Work closely with founders and Shaper leadership to pressure test key initiatives, bring structure to chaos, and turn half-baked ideas into shippable outcomes.
  • Explore the Frontier of Company Creation: Contribute to ideation and early diligence for potential new Shaper companies. If a new company idea emerges from your rotation, you may lead its development as a future founder or founding team member.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a high-growth, early-stage technology company or having started a company of your own is preferred but not strictly required.
  • Generalist excellence: you pick things up quickly, execute ruthlessly, and learn even faster.
  • Builder mindset: entrepreneurial, love zero-to-one environments, take ownership, and bring scrappy energy to your work.
  • Structured thinker: you break down problems clearly and communicate actionable insights.
  • High agency: you don’t wait for permission; you see gaps and fill them.
  • Strong operator: you can manage complex projects across stakeholders and disciplines.
  • Highly adaptable: thrives in a fast-paced, scrappy environment, comfortable with ambiguity and limited direction.
  • Low ego, high ownership: willing to dive into the details while maintaining strategic oversight.
  • Passion for data and startups: curiosity about the data economy and eagerness to work with founders solving novel problems in this space.
  • Culture fit: alignment with motto of smart, nice, and gets things done; ability to work remotely with distributed teams; collaborative, proactive, and excited to work across teams and industries; high integrity and moral compass.

Shaper Capital is a family office founded by Travis May that co-founds and partners with entrepreneurs to build new companies, rather than passively investing like a traditional venture fund. It concentrates on ventures addressing data fragmentation across industries such as healthcare, logistics, and legal services, helping assemble founding teams and solve early technical and operational problems. Its portfolio includes companies like Protege, Catena, Adelphi AI, Arbital Health, Beamrail, and Jay Legal. What sets Shaper Capital apart is its use of personal capital and a CEO-led structure, letting it move at startup speed without fund committees or LP oversight, prioritizing talent and long-term execution over short-term optics. The goal is to build companies that shape the world.

What believers are saying

  • BeamRail raised $700,000 pre-seed on February 17, 2026, led by Shaper.
  • Shaper's portfolio includes Fractional AI, acquired in May 2026 by Anthropic-led buyers.
  • OpenAI partnered with Fractional AI in July 2026, validating Shaper's AI thesis.

What critics are saying

  • Shaper depends on Travis May; one-person key-man risk governs sourcing, branding, and follow-on capital.
  • BeamRail sells to police departments, where procurement cycles and scrutiny delay revenue for years.
  • If no breakout follows Fractional AI, Shaper becomes a capital-intensive lifestyle family office.

What makes Shaper Capital unique

  • Travis May scaled LiveRamp to $200M+ revenue and Datavant to a $7B merger.
  • Shaper Capital acts as an active co-founder, not a passive seed investor.
  • Shaper targets data fragmentation businesses across industries, per its July 11, 2026 site.

Former Cary officer's police admin startup BeamRail raises $700K pre-seed

BeamRail, a public-safety startup founded by former Cary police officer Matthew Matos, has raised $700,000 in pre-seed funding. The round was led by Shaper Capital, marking the investment firm's first local bet, with participation from Flex Capital. The startup has developed an AI platform that consolidates police departments' disconnected data systems — including records management, emails, policy systems and communications platforms — to reduce administrative workload. Matos left the Cary Police Department last year to focus on the company full-time. Shaper Capital is led by serial entrepreneur Travis May, who previously founded LiveRamp and Datavant. The funding will support pilot programmes with law enforcement agencies, with multiple North Carolina departments already in discussions. BeamRail currently employs three people with plans to expand.
