Primetals Technologies wins major ladle furnace upgrade order from Outokumpu Stainless USA.

Primetals Technologies wins major ladle furnace upgrade order from Outokumpu Stainless USA. Press Releases Secondary Metallurgy Stainless Steel * Ladle treatment stand to be upgraded to a 180-ton twin ladle furnace * Enhanced operational flexibility and improved temperature control * Startup scheduled for March 2028 Primetals Technologies has secured a contract to supply a 180-ton twin ladle furnace to Outokumpu Stainless USA. The new furnace will be installed at Outokumpu's facility in Calvert, Alabama, replacing an existing ladle treatment stand from 2012. This upgrade will reduce the plant's carbon footprint, improve temperature control, and provide greater operational flexibility. Enhanced operational flexibility. At the Calvert plant, Outokumpu melts up to 100 percent stainless steel scrap in an electric arc furnace (EAF), followed by processing in an argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) converter. Upgrading one of two ladle treatment stands to the twin ladle furnace will increase flexibility in the AOD process by adding electrical heating capacity after the converter. The installation will utilize the plant's original layout and foundation to ensure smooth integration. The scope of supply includes key mechanical equipment such as a water-cooled ladle cover integrated with the swing gantry system, Primetals Technologies' patented electrode conducting arm with high-current system, automated argon lancing equipment, a hydraulic system, Melt Expert electrode control system, a power solution, and Level 1 automation. Increased productivity. Melt Expert from Primetals Technologies enables dynamic control over the melting process and increases process stability. The system improves furnace productivity by addressing reduced throughput and efficiency. It also lowers energy consumption, helping to mitigate the high energy costs associated with the melting process. Outokumpu Stainless USA and Primetals Technologies have a long-standing partnership, including the design and supply of a state-of-the-art stainless steelmaking plant. The single-line facility, with a 160-ton EAF, 180-ton AOD converter, twin 180-ton treatment stands, and a single-strand slab caster, was successfully commissioned and received final acceptance in 2013. About Outokumpu. Outokumpu is accelerating the green transition as the global leader in sustainable stainless steel. Primetals Technologies introduces new electric arc furnace.

Primetals Technologies introduces new electric arc furnace. Primetals Technologies has announced its next-generation electric arc furnace (EAF) solution, "EAF Ultimate Move," developed for electric steel production. The company stated that the new model, based on 40 years of electric arc furnace experience, aims to combine high performance with low capital expenditure. It was noted that EAF Ultimate Move brings together the strengths of the company's existing EAF Ultimate and EAF Quantum models, providing maximum flexibility especially for greenfield projects. The new solution is designed to address the capital expenditure-focused needs of investors transitioning to electric steel production. From a technical perspective, EAF Ultimate Move offers shorter tap-to-tap times and requires a smaller footprint. It also provides advantages such as lower maintenance requirements and reduced overall capital costs. With this new technology expanding the company's electric steelmaking portfolio, it was emphasized that different EAF designs continue to address various production needs. The statement highlighted that EAF Ultimate Move stands out as an option for producers seeking maximum flexibility without compromising product quality, while the EAF Ultimate concept - supported by grid-friendly Active Power Feeder and advanced automation - offers a suitable solution for modernizing existing plants. The EAF Quantum model, on the other hand, continues to be preferred by producers focusing on ultra-low consumption values, scrap-based charge mixes, and the preheating of scrap and hot briquetted iron (HBI). Hans-Joerg Krassnig commented: "For Primetals Technologies, it is natural to combine the most advantageous features and take established EAF technology to the next level. With our latest development, EAF Ultimate Move - which completes our EAF portfolio alongside EAF Quantum and EAF Ultimate - any type of charge material, including hot metal from the blast furnace, can be processed in any combination." It was also stated that, thanks to a process inspired by EAF Quantum, the furnace shell can be moved toward the tapping area, enabling a more compact plant design, easier maintenance, and reduced capital requirements for auxiliary equipment such as crane systems and building height. This design is made possible by a movable support frame and an adapted hydraulic tilting system. EAF Ultimate Move also includes features such as single-bucket operation, single-point roof swing, and the Furnace Advanced Slag-free Tapping (FAST) system. The FAST system allows drilling and plugging while the power is on, significantly reducing the time between two tapping operations. The company announced that the new electric arc furnace solution was presented to the public at AISTech 2026.
