Requirements
- A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in a related field is required.
- At least 5 years of experience in an acute care facility setting is required.
- At least 3 years of experience in a Laboratory Information System Analyst capacity is required.
- At least 1 year of prior supervisory experience is required.
- Familiarity with College of American Pathologists and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Laboratory Information System regulations is required.
- Familiarity with human resources management techniques and rules is required.
- Organization and time-management skills are required.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, planning, and evaluation skills are required.
- The ability to use effective, appropriate, and diplomatic oral and written communication is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; if no card is available upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
- Monitor, maintain, update, train, and coordinate all aspects of the Laboratory Information System to ensure efficient and optimal operations.
- Act as a liaison for Laboratory Information System and Hospital Information System-related issues with laboratory staff, hospital departments and nursing units, and internal and external information-system personnel.
- Understand the interactive relationship between the Laboratory Information System and related systems, including PowerChart, Cerner AP and CP, Kronos, PBAR, and Master Control.
- Help ensure compliance with College of American Pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, Medical Center, and Charge Data Master requirements.
- Monitor daily Laboratory Information System operations, assign tasks to team members according to their skill sets, and monitor their progress.
- Address and resolve computer-related problems presented by laboratory and non-laboratory personnel.
- Assist the Department Director in formulating Laboratory Information System goals consistent with departmental goals and objectives.
- Keep the Charge Data Master and other billing functions accurate and up to date.
- Work with the Order Communications Coordinator to disseminate information about Cerner system use and capabilities to hospital personnel involved in ordering laboratory tests or reviewing results.
- Assist laboratory personnel in gathering Information System data for reports, quality-assurance data, statistics, and other informational materials.
- Recognize normal, abnormal, and critical results and take appropriate action, including age-related considerations.
- Evaluate new technical procedures and ensure their accuracy and implementation in the Laboratory Information System section.
- Provide input to annual performance-appraisal reviews for staff rotating in the section and assist with commendations, counseling, interviewing, and employee selection.
- Assist the department in meeting accreditation requirements established by licensing agencies.
- Coordinate and integrate department services across intra-departmental, interdepartmental, and hospital-wide levels.
- Plan service provision by maintaining appropriate levels of qualified and competent staff and ensuring supporting policies and procedures are in place.
- Establish and maintain performance-improvement and quality-control activities supporting the department and hospital.
- Provide staff orientation, training, and continuing education.
- Monitor space and resource requirements and the utilization of outside resources.
- Ensure results are available within defined turnaround-time guidelines from the Laboratory Information System perspective.
- Cover the laboratory during emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
- Maintain an English-speaking environment in all work areas.
- Adhere to hospital and departmental policies, procedures, safety requirements, and infection-control guidelines, including use of personal protective equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with SOFT Laboratory Information System.
- Familiarity with Health Level Seven, Structured Query Language, Co-path, PowerChart, PathNet, and Cerner is strongly recommended.
- Experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MDI, FSO, EKM Editor, and Discern Visual Developer.
- Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification from the State of California.
- American Society for Clinical Pathology certification.
- Attendance at Laboratory Information System workshops.
