Requirements
  • Completion of one year toward a bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, administration, or a related field when the internship begins.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office software programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to develop new skills.
  • Strong aptitude for teamwork and adaptability to meet deadlines and accommodate shifting client needs.
  • Superior organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Fluency in French and English, both orally and in writing, because the position requires regular interaction with clients and third parties outside Quebec and collaboration with colleagues outside Canada.
Responsibilities
  • Perform retirement and post-retirement benefits actuarial valuations, including data validation, analysis of plan gains and losses, analysis of plan asset performance, and preparation of valuation reports and related forms.
  • Produce year-end accounting disclosures and expense projections for plans under various financial reporting standards, including International Financial Reporting Standards, Canadian Professional Accountants standards, and Financial Accounting Standards.
  • Complete benefit calculations, review plan documents, produce employee benefit statements, and prepare annual government forms.
  • Participate in the design and pricing of client employee pension plans and executive pension benefits, including cash-flow modelling, demographic projections, and liability evaluation within an asset-liability framework.
  • Produce experience studies to refine demographic and financial assumptions used in actuarial valuations.
  • Design and implement strategies to manage defined-benefit pension plan volatility, including funding strategies, plan design, and risk-transfer solutions.
  • Work in an integrated team of professionals from different offices to resolve actuarial problems in the Canadian retirement-benefits landscape, including union negotiations, risk transfer, and public policy.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis using Mercer proprietary tools.
  • Produce quarterly performance reports for clients.
  • Analyze investment markets, investment managers' styles, and portfolio characteristics, and evaluate their impact on quarterly investment performance.
  • Communicate with investment managers, record keepers, and custodians to gather or clarify client-specific reporting data.
  • Participate in investment manager searches, asset-allocation studies, and other investment-related projects.
  • Support consultants in servicing existing clients and prospects.
  • Develop strategies and solutions related to the costs and funding of group insurance plans.
  • Participate in actuarial valuations of post-retirement benefits, including data validation, assumption setting, analysis of plan gains and losses, and preparation of valuation reports.
  • Validate and compare premiums for group benefit plans during renewals, quotes, or benchmarking exercises.
  • Produce quarterly experience-monitoring reports for clients and analyze the impact of recent changes.
  • Analyze financial statements of group insurance plans and review financial agreements to suit client needs.
  • Evaluate employer obligations by participating in each step of an actuarial valuation.
  • Assist in updating national databases of Mercer clients.
  • Collaborate with professionals to resolve technical actuarial problems involving group insurance and the business sector.
  • Become familiar with Mercer products and services and group benefit market trends to meet client needs.
  • Understand group benefit coverage by reviewing contractual documents for employers and employees.
  • Calculate pension benefits and prepare entitlement statements for events including termination of employment, retirement, death, divorce, and transfer.
  • Update and manage client databases.
  • Prepare annual statements for active and inactive pension-plan members.
  • Calculate pension adjustments and pension adjustment reversals.
  • Prepare annual information returns for submission to government authorities.
  • Collaborate with professionals to meet the needs of clients and their employees.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of systems and procedures.
  • Act as a resource for clients and their employees regarding plan benefits and administration processes.
  • Understand plan provisions and applicable laws.
  • Work as a global benefits coordinator for a multinational client's foreign benefits renewal activities.
  • Collaborate with a consultant to consolidate worldwide pension and other post-employment benefits financial reporting.
  • Coordinate project phases with local actuaries across the globe.
  • Review disclosures and assumptions provided by local actuaries for reasonableness, consistency, and compliance with appropriate accounting standards.
  • Collaborate with a consultant on benefits review projects.
  • Research Mercer internal documentation and surveys on market practices, benefit trends, and legislative changes in foreign countries.
  • Coordinate benefits review projects with clients' local offices and headquarters, Mercer international consultants, and local Mercer specialists.

US employers plan 3.2% merit pay rises for 2027 amid economic uncertainty

US employers plan to maintain moderate salary increases in 2027, according to Marsh's Mercer QuickPulse survey of 1,001 organisations. Base salary merit increases are projected at 3.2%, with total salary increases at 3.5%, marking four consecutive years of similar rates. Economic uncertainty continues influencing compensation decisions, with 57% of employers expecting at least moderate impact. High Tech (3.8%), Banking (3.7%), and Energy (3.6%) lead in merit budgets, whilst Consumer Goods (2.9%) and Healthcare (3.0%) lag behind. Employers expect to promote 8.4% of their workforce in 2027, down from 8.6% in 2026. Off-cycle salary adjustments remain common, with 64% of organisations providing them. AI adoption in compensation planning is growing, with 70% of organisations reporting some automation, primarily for market pricing recommendations and benchmarking.

Marsh beats Q1 estimates with $7.6B revenue, $3.29 EPS as organic growth hits 5%

Marsh reported Q1 revenue of $7.6 billion, up 7.6% year-over-year, beating the consensus estimate of $7.38 billion by 2.88%. Earnings per share came in at $3.29, compared to $3.06 in the prior-year quarter, surpassing the consensus estimate of $3.21 by 2.46%. Key metrics showed mixed performance against analyst expectations. Consolidated organic revenue growth of 5% exceeded the 3.5% estimate, whilst consulting organic growth of 5% topped the 4.4% forecast. However, Guy Carpenter's organic growth of 2% fell short of the 4.2% estimate. Geographically, Marsh's EMEA division generated $1.21 billion in revenue, up 14.1% year-over-year and beating estimates. Mercer consulting revenue reached $1.66 billion, an 11% increase that surpassed the $1.58 billion consensus.
