Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree and/or 3 years of experience in international politics/foreign policy, research & evaluation, social science, or other related fields.
  • Desired, but not required, State Department experience.
  • Strong written and spoken English communication skills in order to develop a wide variety of materials, such as briefings, speeches, fact sheets, news releases, etc. designed to convey information concerning complex programs and/or sensitive issues.
  • Ability to solve problems and encourage consistent, solid performance.
  • Ability to work under significant time pressure and maintain composure while working issues that require a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Knowledge in public communication techniques, media relations (domestic and foreign), message development, outreach, and communication with media outlets.
  • Broad institutional knowledge of the organizational structure of the State Department and its primary mission.
  • Ability to work independently to assess priorities and manage daily coordination of details with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a team to meet fixed daily deadlines and field a wide variety of inquiries from U.S. and foreign press.
  • Develop and draft press guidance to prepare SPOX for the daily press briefing, both responding to specific GPA taskings and identifying issues that may arise.
  • Coordinate press guidance with all relevant offices, including both geographic desks and functional offices that may have equities.
  • Brief the Department Spokesperson and Deputy Spokesperson on EUR press guidance and policy issues.
  • Prepare TQAs, Building Blocks, and scripts for travel and for principals to deploy at public engagements.
  • Support and staff Bureau leadership at media engagements.
  • Coordinate media planning and coverage with counterparts at foreign missions during visits of foreign dignitaries.
  • Provide press analysis on key issues as needed.
  • Support work of EUR/PPD (including the Rapid Response Unit (RRU), which currently focuses on messaging to Russians in Russia to counter Kremlin narratives), including the preparation of information for inclusion in trackers and reporting to State leadership and the NSC.
  • Respond to queries from reporters.
