Sarasota employer named No. 1 in Florida for women.

Sarasota employer named No. 1 in Florida for women. By Michaela Galligan, Sarasota Herald-Tribune USA Today Network via Reuters Connect Updated August 15, 2026 4:14 AM Sarasota Memorial Health Care System has been named Florida's top employer for women by Forbes. The health system, founded in 1925 as Sarasota Hospital and now known as Sarasota Memorial Hospital or SMH, earned the No. 1 ranking in Florida in Forbes' "America's Best Employers for Women 2026." Each year, Forbes, in partnership with market research firm Statista, creates rankings based on an independent survey of more than 146,000 women working for companies that employ at least 1,000 people in the United States. The survey list also incorporates more than four million employer evaluations collected over three years. The 700 employers included in the rankings were evaluated on factors that matter most to women in the workplace, including career ladders and advancement opportunities, pay equity and benefits, workplace culture and conditions, parental leave and family support and representation in leadership. Sarasota Memorial ranked No. 1 among employers for women headquartered in the state of Florida across all industries. It also ranked No. 28 across all industries nationally and No. 8 among all national healthcare organizations. "This recognition reflects the commitment of our entire organization to creating a workplace where every team member feels valued, respected and empowered to grow," Vice President of Human Resources at Sarasota Memorial Laurie Bennett said in a press release. "Women play an essential role in every aspect of our health system-from patient care and research to leadership and innovation-and we are honored to be recognized for fostering an environment where they can thrive." Sarasota Memorial says that women represent 75% of the health system's more than 11,000 employees and 73% of leadership positions across hospitals, physician practices, outpatient care centers and other facilities throughout the region. Women working at SMH graduate with Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees Eight SMH team members, all women, recently graduated with their Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from the Florida State University College of Nursing. The women supported one another through late nights, demanding coursework, full-time careers, family responsibilities and everything in between. Florida State University ranked No. 2 in Florida for employment of women in the Forbes ranking. Michaela Galligan is an intern covering a variety of topics for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Photo courtesy Sarasota Memorial Hospital. In response to rapid growth in North Port and Sarasota County, Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) is expanding to a North Port hospital, projected to open in late 2028. "As the population in North Port grew, we knew we needed to build a hospital there," says Jeffrey Wesner, President of SMH-North Port. The construction marks the third hospital SMH has built in its 100-year history, and it will also be the city's first acute-care hospital. SMH released a virtual tour on June 22 of the hospital's layout. Wesner says the project will result in improved access to high-quality healthcare and a stronger local economy through job creation. "We're really excited about being the first hospital in North Port and bringing our five-star health care closer to the people in that market," he says. This $507 million hospital campus will be a nine-story building-the city's first high-rise-and will feature an adjacent three-story medical office building. SMH-North Port will offer emergency care, in-patient and surgical services, full imaging, intensive care and specialty care, including cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, neurology, urology and pulmonology. "The medical office building will bring much needed physician space to the community," Wesner says. "There are not a lot of physician offices in North Port." While the hospital will open with 100 beds, the top three floors have shell space that allows expansion to 208 beds. Wesner adds that already constructing shell space is something no other SMH has implemented on an initial build. The campus design has the capacity to increase to more than 400 beds in the future. It will also house six surgical suites, two cardiac cath labs and two endoscopy labs. Wesner says SMH-North Port will help recruit additional physicians to the community and will support greater regional growth. "By having a hospital in North Port, it will help the community grow significantly," he says. 941-917-9000, [email protected] Pictured: SMH-North Port is slated to be on a 32-acre site in the 4800 block of North Sumter Boulevard.
