Job Description

Western Digital, the premiere producer of hard disk drives (HDD), is seeking an equipment engineer to maintain and perform analyses on our fleet of Rigaku and Panalytical X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and X-Ray Reflectivity (XRR) instruments. The production of hard drives includes the development of novel thin films on head wafers and magnetic media. The primary purpose of our work is to characterize these stacks of thin films in support of next generation HDD technology. A laboratory on this scale requires the maintenance of many pieces of equipment and analytical instrumentation. These needs include maintenance and troubleshooting of vacuum systems, high voltage electron and/or X-ray sources, water cooling systems, process gases, and electronic control systems, including circuit boards and microelectronic components. The candidate will work side-by-side with and learn from a team of x-ray scientists and analysts.

Qualifications

BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related engineering discipline is required. 

Lab or work experience maintaining analytical instrumentation, including both software and hardware, and a strong desire to work with your hands is required. 

Experience with hands-on engineering clubs is also a plus.

Strong problem-solving abilities and a desire to thrive in a team environment are essential. 

The candidate will join a team of materials scientists who support Western Digital’s research, development, and manufacturing efforts world-wide. 

This position is located in our world-class Analytical Sciences Laboratory in San Jose, California.
