Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current and active state-approved medication aide or technician certification is required.
  • Insulin certification is preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or Basic Life Support certification is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, is required.
  • The employee must be able to stand or walk for extended periods and move throughout the community, resident apartments, and other areas.
  • The employee must be able to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, or balance.
  • The employee must communicate effectively and identify and interpret written information.
  • The employee must lift up to 50 pounds independently and up to 200 pounds with assistance.
  • The employee must follow infection prevention and control protocols, including using personal protective equipment when necessary.
  • The employee must complete required training and ongoing education initiatives.
  • Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a background check and drug screening and participating in required health assessments such as tuberculosis testing or physical evaluations.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct resident care, including distributing medications according to each resident’s individualized plan of care.
  • Observe residents and communicate changes in condition to physicians, health care proxies, and supervisors, providing timely interventions as instructed.
  • Document observations, incidents, interventions, communications, clinical procedures, and daily medication assistance and care throughout the shift.
  • Pass required information to the next shift and direct supervisor in a timely manner, and oversee timely documentation by resident assistants.
  • Check and record vital signs, weights, and blood glucose levels as assigned.
  • Use proactive interventions, monitoring, and safety practices during room checks and rounds.
  • Administer and document medications according to the five rights: right medication, route, resident, time, and dose.
  • Provide glucose monitoring and administer insulin when certified as an insulin medication technician.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living, including bathing, showering, oral care, toileting, and dressing.
  • Assist residents with nutritional and hydration needs and document this care in the nursing record.
  • Perform restorative nursing techniques, including positioning, activities-of-daily-living training, and passive range-of-motion exercises.
  • Assist residents with transfers and ambulation using proper body mechanics and respond to urgent calls.
  • Encourage residents to participate in scheduled activities and assist them in getting to activities.
  • Maintain a restraint-free environment.
  • Support fall-prevention programs for residents who need them.
  • Welcome, orient, and transfer residents according to facility procedures.
  • Assist with post-mortem care as instructed.
  • Oversee the medication delivery system, including order entry, receipt and tracking, medication administration record documentation, narcotic counts, and checking in medications.
  • Notify the pharmacy and supervisor of medication issues and help resolve them promptly.
  • Attend in-service classes and staff meetings, assist with orienting new employees, and lead or coach resident assistants and certified nursing assistants.
  • Promote residents’ physical, personal, and emotional well-being and support their independence and self-care.
  • Understand and follow residents’ advance directives.
  • Ensure effective communication with residents’ families regarding their physical, personal, and emotional well-being.
  • Take direction from management, use initiative, and participate in conflict intervention and resolution for residents, families, employees, and others.
  • Participate in staff activities that support teamwork, unity, and morale.
  • Use personal protective equipment as required by company policy and applicable law.
