Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program is required.
- At least 5 years of experience in a surgical care, acute care, or ambulatory care setting is required.
- Experience in a specialty area is required.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with physicians, staff, and patients is required.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, as well as Internet access and utilization, are required.
- Demonstrated excellent customer service behavior is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills are required to handle sensitive situations and confidential information.
- Ability to make effective decisions with appropriate stakeholder input is required.
- A valid California Vocational Nursing license is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training certification is required; if unavailable upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and maintained through renewal before expiration.
- Licensed Vocational Nurse Intravenous Therapy Certification is required.
- One specialty certification is required from the listed approved specialty programs.
- Keck Program Preceptor Certification is required; new hires must obtain it within 90 days or by the next class.
Responsibilities
- Use basic assessment, participate in planning, execute interventions according to the plan of care or treatment plan, and contribute to evaluating individualized interventions.
- Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain and record vital signs and medication lists, monitor patient flow, assist physicians with minor clinical procedures, perform electrocardiograms, prepare patient charts with pertinent medical information, and administer medication as directed by the physician.
- Provide direct patient care.
- Administer medications, including injections and intravenous medications.
- Assess and monitor patients’ conditions and notify the physician or other healthcare professional.
- Demonstrate professional communication for patient care, education, and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
- Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by physicians as needed.
- Schedule and receive patients.
- Prepare and maintain medical records.
- Perform administrative duties, including answering and returning patient calls, receiving and sorting incoming faxes, and obtaining prior authorizations.
- Enter charges into the system accurately and promptly.
- Handle telephone calls and write correspondence.
- Serve as a liaison between physicians and other individuals.
- Take patient histories and vital signs.
- Implement effective and efficient patient flow.
- Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed.
- Assist physicians with examinations and treatments as permitted by the license, including special procedures, minor surgical procedures, and diagnostic examinations.
- Organize pharmacy refill requests for physician approval.
- Provide medical information and education to patients according to established protocols and guidelines.
- Triage patients in person and by telephone.
- Maintain equipment and supplies and identify and arrange for equipment requiring repair.
- Maintain patients’ privacy, safety, and confidentiality and ensure a safe environment in accordance with standards, policies, safety regulations, and infection control policies.
- Act as a lead and train entry-level staff when assigned.
- Act as a subject matter expert to ensure team members understand specialty-related procedures and provide in-service training as needed.
- Act as the Competency Validator when designated and lead and train entry-level staff or new team members.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support protocol development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
