Requirements
  • At least five years of management experience within a complex organization.
  • A demonstrated record as a proven leader and manager of employees.
  • A demonstrated record of building effective working relationships with internal and external entities.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational policies.
  • A master's degree is required.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States as a citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, or foreign national authorized to work without employer sponsorship.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable independent transportation for periodic in-state work travel, or compliance with UW-Madison vehicle use authorization requirements.
  • The selected candidate must pass an initial caregiver check under the Wisconsin Caregiver Act and every four years.
Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic insight and direction for operations, policy development, and external relations.
  • Assess how to efficiently and effectively support delivery of Extension programming across Wisconsin.
  • Maintain policies and procedures and develop systems supporting strategic planning, division-wide policy development and management, personnel management, technology, budget, facilities, and internal and external communications.
  • Partner with the Academic Associate Deans to support programming priorities.
  • Work with Assistant Deans to engage external partners, solicit their needs and priorities, and align them with Extension capacity and expertise.
  • Work with operations units and specialists to streamline services and align work with customer needs and priorities in budget, human resources, communications, information technology, access and inclusion, facilities, planning, and policy.
  • Serve as a core member of the Dean's Executive Team by contributing to and developing policies and strategies to advance Extension's work.
  • Align annual strategic initiatives with Assistant Deans and operational units.
  • Engage with administrative leadership at UW-Madison and other schools, colleges, and divisions to address issues and ensure alignment.
  • Manage the overall budget for Operations and the Dean's Office.
  • Develop strategies to diversify funding sources for Extension priorities.
  • Supervise Operations Directors, Assistant Deans for Geographies, and operations specialists.
  • Build relationships with federal, state, local, and tribal officials to address mutual priorities and secure external funding.
  • Engage with administrative leadership of other Extension organizations, particularly in the North Central region.
  • Develop new and strengthen existing strategic partnerships with nonprofit and nongovernment organizations.
  • Build consensus and develop collaborative working relationships with stakeholders and administrative and academic departments.
  • Exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and approving hours worked for at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees.
  • Serve on university review committees and work with the Faculty Senate, Deans and Associate Deans, General Counsel, and University Leadership.
  • Provide leadership for academic programs by establishing strategic direction and priorities, supervising program leadership, and monitoring compliance with laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and contractual obligations.
  • Advise and collaborate with the Dean, Assistant Deans, and Office of the Provost on critical issues and represent the functional area at meetings and events.
  • Direct ongoing assessment and continuous improvement of academic programs and services by guiding annual goals, monitoring progress, articulating challenges, and reporting outcomes.
  • Ensure initiatives use program assessment and data analysis to improve strategies, identify opportunities, and make recommendations to the Dean.
  • Lead special initiatives and academic programs requiring senior leadership attention in program design, planning, coordination, and interaction with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work occasional nights and weekends as required by divisional needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience managing a physically distributed workforce.
  • Experience and understanding of the Extension mission.
  • Experience working within a Land Grant University or large public institution.
  • Experience working with local, state, and/or federal elected officials.
  • Experience engaging in fundraising and philanthropic approaches to diversify funding.
  • Understanding of Native Nations governance and sovereignty and ability to work with diverse tribes.
  • An earned terminal degree.
