Requirements
- An associate degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, chemistry, or biological science is required for Medical Laboratory Technicians.
- A bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, microbiology, chemistry, or biological science is required for Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists.
- Medical Laboratory Scientists/Medical Technologists must hold certification from ASCP, AMT, HEW, or an equivalent certification.
- Medical Laboratory Technicians must hold MLT certification from ASCP or an equivalent certification.
- Medical Laboratory Technician certification candidates must be eligible to sit for and pass the applicable boards within six months.
- Employees must obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for their assigned roles.
- Employees must comply with applicable state and federal regulations, regulatory agency guidelines, standard operating procedures, and company policies.
- Employees must maintain required certifications and licenses before expiration.
- Employees must complete mandatory company modules and job-specific training within the specified timeframe.
Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes according to policies and procedures.
- Prepare reagents, quality control materials, and other testing materials.
- Perform required equipment maintenance.
- Assist in evaluating data and correlating new instruments and procedures.
- Apply knowledge of open and expiration dates and storage requirements for specimens, quality control materials, and reagents.
- Protect patient information according to HIPAA's need-to-know principle when relaying information to patients.
- Enter comments and use RBV for result reporting.
- Report critical values to appropriate personnel using the patient's full name, second identifier, test name, results, and the identity of the person receiving the results.
- Assess patient results using inquiry and print patient reports.
- Recognize computer problems, report them to information technology, and troubleshoot within capabilities.
- Document procedures during downtime.
- Print and review shift pending reports and note critical patients or those with testing issues.
- Review and record quality control results and troubleshooting steps to determine acceptability.
- Identify and resolve problems and take corrective action when evaluating testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity.
- Correctly identify specimens by matching the patient's name and medical record number.
- Review and record patient results for acceptability before verification.
- Assist the Manager/Director in writing and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures.
- Assist in training new personnel.
- Assist with preparing and maintaining facility accreditation readiness for CAP/DNV visits.
- Report safety-related incidents promptly through the Midas/RDE tool.
- Attend safety-related training programs, work safely, and monitor the work environment for safety issues.
Desired Qualifications
- One year of experience is preferred for Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 1.
- Three years of experience in an acute care facility is preferred for Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist 2.
- One year of experience is preferred for Medical Laboratory Technician 1.
- One year of experience is preferred for Medical Laboratory Technician 2.
