Requirements
  • A Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with an educational emphasis on radio-frequency/microwave integrated-circuit design.
  • At least 3 years of experience in RF power-amplifier design and development up to 60 GHz.
  • PA tapeout experience using silicon-on-insulator or silicon-germanium technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of differential and single-ended power amplifiers, including modes of operation, matching, bias, and architecture considerations.
  • Strong circuit-design skills, including IC layout, parasitic-extraction analysis, electromigration analysis, and simulation of linear and nonlinear RF power-amplifier behavior to meet gain, linearity, power, and bandwidth targets.
  • Strong electromagnetic knowledge of passive components, including couplers, baluns, and matching networks.
  • Proficiency with Cadence Virtuoso, Keysight Advanced Design System, Keysight SystemVue, and Siemens Calibre.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulators such as HFSS, Momentum, and EMX.
  • Knowledge of RF transceiver architectures, digital communication systems, spread spectrum, single- and multi-carrier techniques, and modulation types such as QPSK, APSK, and QAM.
  • Willingness to work full-time on-site at the Atlanta, Georgia office.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop RF power amplifiers for applications such as SATCOM, Wi-Fi, and cellular.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate RF power-amplifier designs into larger system-on-chip systems.
  • Create prototypes and test RF power-amplifier designs to ensure reliability and performance under real-world conditions.
  • Present detailed design reviews covering integrated-circuit, package, electromagnetic, simulation, measurement, and thermal results, supporting continuous improvement of RF design processes.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in semiconductor technology.
  • Support all stages of product development, from concept through mass production.
Desired Qualifications
  • RF/microwave design experience in the Ku, K, Ka, Q, or V-band frequency ranges.
  • Familiarity with radio-related test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, vector signal generators, and network analyzers, with hands-on RF testing and measurement laboratory experience.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot design issues.

Falcomm raises $21M to advance power amplifier technology for wireless and satellite systems

Falcomm, a fabless semiconductor company, has filed to raise $21.2 million in new funding, according to filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The company designs power amplifiers and integrated front-end modules for wireless communication, satellite systems, and defence applications. Falcomm's proprietary architecture, developed at Georgia Tech, aims to improve energy efficiency in solid-state RF power amplification. The company says power amplifier technology has seen little innovation for decades. The filing was made under Rule 504 or 506 of Regulation D or Section 4(a)(5) of the Securities Act of 1933. The Falcomm team brings over 20 years of combined experience in semiconductor design for wireless communication and radar applications.

The next big startup success story to come out of Georgia Tech just might reshape the very core of how we communicate.Falcomm, a semiconductor startup based out of Atlanta, has a new type of power amplifier for the wireless communications market. Its Dual-Drive PA, which founder Edgar Garay developed as a PhD candidate at Tech, can improve the power and efficiency of wireless signal transmissions in satellites, IoT devices, wearables, and cell phones.The startup estimates that the power amplifier market is worth $23 billion. And creating more energy efficient power amplifiers could have major impacts on hitting climate change goals while helping to move more semiconductor manufacturers domestically.“Power amplifiers are the workhorse of the modern electronic era, but improvement to this technology hasn’t kept pace with the rise of the innovation economy,” said Garay. Falcomm’s technology can help communications manufacturers “realize massive efficiency gains while lowering costs,” he added.We first caught up with Garay in the early part of this year to learn about how Garay worked to scale Falcomm during his time on Georgia Tech’s campus.Now, Georgia Tech is financially backing the early-stage startup.Falcomm just announced the close of its $4 million seed round. Squadra Ventures, a Baltimore-based firm with a focus on cyber and national security startups, led the round.
