Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in data governance and data management, including experience in artificial intelligence ethics or policy.
  • A proven track record of leading large-scale initiatives in a federated or decentralized environment, such as higher education, healthcare, or complex research and development organizations, through collaboration rather than direct authority.
  • Ability to present complex risk and governance concepts to senior university leadership and coach departmental data coordinators on day-to-day data-entry standards.
  • Familiarity with data and artificial intelligence lifecycle management, metadata management tools, data cataloging, and machine learning operations or artificial intelligence risk frameworks.
  • Understanding of artificial intelligence data readiness, including how traditional machine learning and agentic artificial intelligence interact with structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience partnering closely with data engineering and analytics teams.
  • Successful background check.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and execution of the university’s data and artificial intelligence governance operating model.
  • Define policies, standards, and roadmaps for data integrity, privacy, and responsible artificial intelligence use.
  • Build and enable a community of practice among distributed data stewards and artificial intelligence practitioners.
  • Design and operationalize artificial intelligence governance controls, including model inventories, risk assessments, and ethical reviews.
  • Partner with academic and administrative leads to ensure artificial intelligence deployment is transparent, fair, and compliant with emerging regulations.
  • Establish a unified metadata layer and translate between business data analysts, subject-matter experts, and data and analytics engineering teams.
  • Help departments implement governance tooling, define data lineage, improve data quality, and document metadata for complex institutional datasets.
  • Bridge Information Technology, the Information Security Office, the Office of the Provost, and administrative and academic units.
  • Translate complex technical governance requirements into actionable guidance for nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Develop key performance indicators to track adoption and the health of governance practices.
  • Report progress to university leadership and advocate for cultural shifts that treat data as a strategic institutional asset.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience within a Research I university or a highly complex nonprofit environment.
  • Professional certification in data management, such as Certified Data Management Professional, or artificial intelligence governance, such as Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional.
  • Knowledge of global data privacy regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, as they relate to administrative data and academic research.
