Requirements
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 10 years of product design or engineering experience in an engineering environment, including demonstrated ability to design moderately complex fabricated and machined parts and assemblies.
  • Intermediate proficiency with SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER, AutoCAD, or Autodesk Inventor, along with knowledge of engineering drafting principles and practices.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods, welding techniques, machine tools, cutting tools, and machining processes.
  • Ability to design simple fixtures and tooling for machining precision parts.
  • Working knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Working knowledge of common machine-shop measuring devices, including calipers and micrometers, and machining equipment such as lathes and mills.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and manufacturing-environment processes and safety risks.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality-assurance programs.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Independently plan and perform engineering and technical work involving the design, engineering, and drafting of company products.
  • Complete most 2D part drawings, 3D part modeling, and manufacturing part drawings based on existing design layouts.
  • Develop manufacturing part drawings in accordance with applicable industry and engineering standards.
  • Verify product designs using 3D modeling in SolidWorks, PRO/ENGINEER, or Autodesk Inventor by checking form, fit, and function.
  • Assign part numbers for new manufactured parts and purchased items.
  • Organize and maintain the production drawing file store using Autodesk Vault or an equivalent database.
  • Create and maintain accurate bills of materials in the company enterprise resource planning system.
  • Handle engineering changes and engineering-related corrective actions, and revise part drawings to refine products or correct errors based on shop-floor input.
  • Create illustrated product-parts diagrams and write product manuals.
  • Provide engineering technical support to fabrication and machine-shop operations.
  • Revise and refine product designs to facilitate manufacturing, reduce production cost and time, reduce material waste, and ease fabrication and machining.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, make recommendations, and prepare and present concept or working sketches and drawings.
  • Apply knowledge of metallurgy and material properties when designing products using stainless steels, duplex stainless steels, cast iron, Ni-Resist, carbon steels, and aluminum.
  • Assist with the design and development of new products from conceptual ideas and design layouts through final product designs.
  • Interface with outside vendors regarding component selection, manufacturing, and assembly.
  • Work with requests for proposals, requests for quotations, and requests for information.
  • Review assigned projects to determine test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, technical problems, and possible solutions, including part redesign, material or part substitution, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
  • Create 3D ABS plastic models for analysis and make specialized molds and forms for investment castings and displays.
  • Assist in new product development.
  • Confer with supervisors, production personnel, quality personnel, and others to resolve quality problems.
  • Participate in continuous-improvement efforts to enhance product quality.
  • Maintain clean and safe operations by following company rules, safety procedures, and regulations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of MATLAB, Mathcad, and Maple is a plus.
  • A creative approach to generating new ideas.
  • Ability to handle daily problems with positive solutions and interface effectively with coworkers and other departments.
