Free CRM tools are now more accessible: what African founders need to know.

Free CRM tools are now more accessible: what African founders need to know. Managing customer relationships is one of the biggest challenges for growing startups. Whether you're a SaaS founder, e-commerce business owner, or service provider, keeping track of client interactions, follow-ups, and deals can quickly become overwhelming - especially when you're bootstrapping. Enter Mesh, an AI-powered contacts and relationship management app from Automattic (the company behind WordPress). The platform just launched its Android version, making it even easier for African entrepreneurs to access affordable CRM tools without breaking the bank. What is Mesh, and why should you care? Mesh is designed to be a CRM for everyone - not just enterprise teams with dedicated sales departments. The app combines your contacts, communication history, and relationship data in one place, powered by AI to help you stay on top of your business relationships. For African founders, this is significant. Many traditional CRM platforms (Salesforce, HubSpot) come with steep price tags that don't make sense for early-stage startups. Mesh offers a lightweight alternative that works on the devices most of FundNaija, Inc. already use daily. Why Android availability matters for African entrepreneurs. The Android launch is particularly important for the African startup ecosystem. Mobile-first adoption is the norm here - many entrepreneurs run their businesses primarily from smartphones. By bringing Mesh to Android, the platform is recognizing that African founders need tools that work on their preferred devices, without requiring expensive laptops or desktop setups. This aligns with how modern African businesses operate: lean, mobile, and efficient. Key features that help growing businesses. * AI-Powered Insights: The app learns your communication patterns and suggests follow-ups * Unified Contact Management: All your customer data in one searchable place * Relationship Tracking: Never forget where you left off with a client or investor * Mobile-First Design: Built for entrepreneurs on the move Why this matters for founders. As you scale your startup, investor relations and customer management become critical. Tools like Mesh help you maintain professional relationships without the overhead of expensive enterprise software. When you're pitching to investors or managing a growing customer base, having organized relationship data gives you a competitive edge. Plus, understanding your customer relationships better helps you tell a compelling story to potential funders about your business growth and retention metrics. The bigger picture. This launch signals a broader trend: affordable, accessible tools are becoming the norm. African founders no longer need to choose between expensive enterprise solutions and spreadsheets. There's now a middle ground - powerful, AI-enabled tools designed for modern, mobile-first businesses. As you build your startup, investing in the right tools early (even free ones) can save you time and help you scale more efficiently. Want to check your funding readiness? Automattic's Mesh personal CRM launches on Android with AI features

Automattic's relationship manager app Mesh is now available on Android. The software, acquired by WordPress.com's parent company last year, allows users to visualize and track contacts in their personal and professional networks, add notes, and set reminders to reach out. The Android version supports split-screen and pop-up views, keyboard shortcuts for tablets, home screen widgets, and real-time sync across devices. Mesh interoperates with Automattic's messaging app Beeper, enabling users to draft texts or access profiles directly. The app includes Nexus AI in early access, letting users query their network by company, location, or expertise. Personal information isn't used for ad targeting, as Mesh operates on subscriptions. It's free for up to 1,000 contacts, with paid tiers offering unlimited contacts and additional features. Around 70% of Mesh's customers use it for business purposes.

Bluesky's AI assistant Attie expands into an open social research tool.

Bluesky's AI assistant Attie expands into an open social research tool. 8:13 AM PDT · July 24, 2026 Attie, Bluesky's AI assistant that lets you build custom social feeds without programming, is evolving into an open-ended research tool. The company this week said it's added a new feature to the AI assistant, called Quests, that lets users ask it for information and news spreading across the broader Bluesky social network, nicknamed the Atmosphere. This includes not only Bluesky, but also any app that integrates with the underlying AT Protocol. Bluesky's user growth has slowed over the past eight months - the social network saw its user base double to 40 million last October, within just a year, but it now reports around 45.6 million registered accounts. So the company has been looking to develop tools and services that could allow it to grow its user base and potentially monetize it. Attie, launched in March, is a separate product by Bluesky that lets users design their own algorithm, create custom feeds, and, one day possibly, vibe-code their own apps. While the AI assistant is free for the time being, the company has toyed with the idea of charging for the service. Quests adds new capabilities to Attie, allowing users to ask it open-ended questions to research what's happening on this part of the open social web. For instance, you could ask Attie to pull information about trending topics, or help you identify the most influential accounts in a particular field or location, the company explained. "Attie's AI is a tool that helps you make sense of the internet, helping you fight back against the proliferation of misinformation and noise by giving you the tools to find the truth yourself," wrote Bluesky's chief innovation officer Jay Graber, who stepped down in March from her role as CEO of the company. (She's since been replaced by Toni Schneider, the former founding CEO of Automattic.) "Our bet is that tools that help people make sense of the world will prove to be more useful than those that fill it with confusion," Graber wrote. "We want Attie to reduce the barrier to entry and expertise required to learn how to use the AT Protocol, and to put the tools for customizing your experience in the hands of anyone who wants them." Graber noted Attie is being redesigned to add accessibility features and a new logo, and more changes are coming in the months ahead. For now, the new Attie experience is in beta, and users will be invited in from a waitlist over the coming weeks. While many Bluesky users tend to dislike AI for economic, political, and environmental reasons, the company has had to balance its community's leanings with the need to generate revenue to help itself and the AT Protocol development it leads remain afloat. In March, Bluesky said it had raised $100 million in funding in a round that closed in 2025. That gives it runway to experiment with ideas like Attie and how AI can play a role in the Atmosphere, as well as with other services, like a premium subscription or tools for power users.
