Requirements
  • Knowledge and experience of circulation operations in an academic library, including billing, reserves, stacks maintenance, technical services, and public services.
  • Experience supervising others, including training, scheduling, and delegating work.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing short- and long-term projects and departmental priorities.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, client/server database systems, and other software packages.
  • Experience working in a networked environment with proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and online collaboration tools such as Slack, Confluence, and JIRA.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
  • Strong oral communication skills to represent Access Services to councils, committees, students, and faculty regarding billing, reserves, borrowing privileges, and problem resolution.
  • Strong writing skills to communicate effectively with patrons, peers, subordinates, and supervisors through memos, manuals, reports, and other written forms.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, managers, safety personnel, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Problem-solving skills to resolve disputes and discrepancies diplomatically.
  • Ability to follow supervisors' directions and provide clear directions to student employees.
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail, verify work for accuracy, and follow through with minimal direction.
  • Ability to function effectively amid interruptions and distractions while prioritizing assignments and managing changing workloads, deadlines, competing requirements, and heavy workloads.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all Charles E. Young Research Library functions and supervise student staff.
  • Perform circulation desk activities, including checkouts, check-ins, renewals, requests, patron assistance, and enforcement of library policy.
  • Supervise and train 20–30 full-time-equivalent student staff.
  • Provide public service and handle billing questions.
  • Process course reserves.
  • Coordinate and conduct lost and missing item searches.
  • Maintain stacks and item records.
  • Issue library cards.
  • Respond to user complaints and safety and security issues.
  • Perform basic technical processing.
  • Ensure access and public service functions are efficiently performed and coordinated during nights and weekends in the absence of other Access Services staff.
  • Serve as a Unified Access Services representative for the LibAnswers reference support team.
  • Respond to tickets triaged for Unified Access Services and the Charles E. Young Research Library during regularly scheduled hours.
  • Monitor shared department email accounts and respond to patron inquiries.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating Unified Access Services content on UCLA Library webpages.
  • Coordinate with evening and weekend Unified Access Services staff to maintain safe and secure operations and provide emergency backup coverage for libraries reporting to the University Librarian.
  • Modify the work schedule when coverage needs arise.
  • Work with Unified Access Services colleagues, Community Service Officers, and the University of California Police Department to report and resolve library safety and security issues.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Library Service Platforms such as Ex Libris Alma and Primo, including circulation, interlibrary loan, and reserves modules and training others.
  • Basic technical processing skills, including adding items to records, adding barcodes, relabeling or updating call numbers, and changing item locations.
  • Experience serving as a point of contact for building safety, security, or facilities issues.
  • Experience with or understanding of course-reserves processing for physical and digital materials.
