JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State’s Population Research Institute (PRI) seeks a demographer for a Postdoctoral Scholar position to work with Professors Jessica Ho (Penn State) and Arun Hendi (Princeton) on an NIH-funded project on migration and U.S. mortality. The intended start date is September 1, 2025.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct collaborative research on how domestic and international migration influence geographic inequality in mortality both within the U.S. and between the U.S. and other high-income countries. The successful candidate will contribute to both data analysis and co-authorship of research articles, and work directly with both PIs to fulfill the project aims.

This position is funded for one year from the start date, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, conditional on successful progress.

Education and Experience: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in demography, sociology, economics, or a related field on or before the start date, expertise in the analysis of mortality, survey data methods, and life table methods, familiarity with the use of vital statistics data, ability to write code in R and/or Stata for statistical and demographic analyses, strong interpersonal communication and excellent writing, problem-solving, and time management skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively on research teams.

Preferred skills include experience conducting research on geographic inequalities in mortality or health; experience using large U.S. Census datasets; expertise in event history/survival analysis; a record of publication in top demography journals; and ability meet the eligibility requirements for U.S. Census Special Sworn Status (SSS).
