Requirements
  • Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited university program
  • Professional experience in the areas of voice and neurologically involved patients required, preferably in a clinical setting
  • Previous experience or training at an inter-disciplinary voice center is strongly preferred
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from AHSA
  • Texas State License to practice Speech-Language Pathology
  • Ability to assess and develop comprehensive speech programs
  • Familiarity with communication disorders
  • Maintains competency in current, evidence-based intervention methods
  • Ability to build rapport with patients
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive and patient demeanor
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Valuable skills include rigid and flexible laryngeal videostroboscopy, flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing FEES, MBSS/VFSS, acoustic and aerodynamic voice assessment, and competency in providing voice and swallowing therapy, behavioral cough suppression therapy, and respiratory retraining
Responsibilities
  • Evaluates and treats patients with complex voice, swallowing, and airway deficits secondary to neurological disorders, vocal fold lesions, functional dysphonia, and head and neck cancer
  • Performs instrumental assessment of swallowing through flexible endoscopy FEES or modified barium swallow study MBSS
  • Performs diagnostic laryngeal imaging with flexible and rigid videostroboscopy
  • Uses acoustic and aerodynamic analysis to rate vocal and airway function
  • Interpret and document diagnostic findings that will contribute to the patient’s understanding of voice or swallowing disorder and treatment goals
  • Participates with interdisciplinary team to create individualized treatment plans that will assist in the rehabilitation of voice and swallowing including pre- and post-operative therapy
  • Provides support and communication with the patient regarding treatment goals, progress, and maintenance
  • Provides patient and parent/caregiver education and training for home exercise programs
Desired Qualifications
  • Additional interest in academic research and participation in national subspecialty conferences (ex: Fall Voice, DRS) is valuable
  • Previous experience or training at an inter-disciplinary voice center is strongly preferred
