Linklaters and South Africa's Webber Wentzel end 13-year alliance.

Linklaters and South Africa's Webber Wentzel end 13-year alliance. Move continues string of strategy changes in South Africa by major law firms including A&O Shearman, Norton Rose Fulbright and legacy Hogan Lovells 28 July 2026 Linklaters and South Africa's Webber Wentzel announced today they will end their 13-year alliance, in a move GLP understands will close the last exclusive arrangement between an independent South African law firm and a major London outfit. The alliance is set to come to an end in November. The two firms, which have worked together for more than 60 years, presented the decision as mutual and amicable, noting in a joint statement that as their "respective strategies have evolved, they have jointly agreed that they can best serve their clients by returning to the more informal structure that characterised their relationship before the alliance". Gareth Driver, senior partner of Webber Wentzel, said: "Our relationship with Linklaters spans more than half a century, and we hold the firm and its people in the highest regard. This marks the next chapter for Webber Wentzel as a proudly African firm with deep South African roots and a track record of advising on the continent's most significant matters. We look forward to continued growth alongside our clients across the continent." Advertisement Aedamar Comiskey, Linklaters' senior partner and chair, said: "I'd like to thank Gareth and everyone at Webber Wentzel for their partnership, which we have deeply valued over many years. Our commitment to supporting our clients in Africa remains as strong as ever. We'll continue to serve them as we always have, drawing on our long-standing relationships in the region and the strength of our global team." The move is unlikely to materially affect Linklaters, which grew into a £2.5bn business in FY26 with average profit per equity partner of £2.5m, fuelled by strong growth in the US and Asia. It ends an alliance that gave the firm's global clients access to Webber Wentzel's 400 lawyers across Johannesburg and Cape Town, as part of a relationship that included joint training, business development and more than 40 lawyer secondments, according to Currency News. LAW OVER BORDERS COMPARATIVE GUIDES Global M&A Law Guide Mergers and acquisitions remain a central mechanism through which companies pursue growth, transformation and competitive advantage... | 3mos. The move comes amid a period of churn in South Africa's legal market among international firms. In March, the 120-lawyer South African arm of Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) left the global firm and launched as an independent business, 15 years after NRF entered the market through a merger with Deneys Reitz, then one of South Africa's largest firms. In late 2024, legacy Hogan Lovells announced the closure of its Johannesburg office, along with offices in Sydney and Warsaw, citing a focus on "strategic markets", around the same time that A&O Shearman shuttered its office in the city as part of the restructuring that followed the merger of Allen & Overy and New York firm Shearman & Sterling.

Norton Rose Fulbright represents Heelstone in the financing of three solar projects.

Norton Rose Fulbright represents Heelstone in the financing of three solar projects. Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright advised Heelstone Renewable Energy, LLC (Heelstone), a utility-scale renewable energy platform and a Qualitas Energy company, on a financing and tax equity commitment supporting the development of three solar projects in Illinois. The financing included a construction-to-term, revolving tax equity bridge and letters of credit facility and closed on July 20, 2026. The portfolio consists of the 40 MWac Two Blues Solar and the 28 MWac Snapdragon Solar projects in Perry County, as well as the 18 MWac Pike Solar project in Fayette County. Together, the projects have a combined installed capacity of 86 MWac and are expected to reach commercial operation by the end of 2026. Each of the three projects is party to a separate long-term power purchase agreement with Meta, pursuant to which Meta purchases the environmental attributes generated by the respective project. Stonehenge Capital arranged the tax equity investment, and ING Capital LLC acted as the sole bookrunner, coordinating lead arranger, green loan structuring bank and administrative agent. "This financing highlights Heelstone's ability to execute on a growing renewable energy pipeline and reflects continued investor confidence in well-structured clean energy projects," said Christy Rivera, who co-led Norton Rose Fulbright's representation. "We were pleased to support Heelstone in obtaining financing for these projects as demand for reliable renewable generation continues to grow." The financing marks another significant step in Heelstone's development of utility-scale renewable energy across the United States, adding clean energy generation capacity to the grid while advancing the use of corporate renewables procurement. Norton Rose Fulbright's team was led by Christy Rivera (New York) and Hilary Lefko (Washington, DC) and included Ibrahim Basit (Houston), Daniel Too, Laura Salazar Alvarez (New York) and Gabriela Larralde (Washington, DC). The firm's projects practice is one of the largest of its kind with more than 350 lawyers across 50 offices acting on some of the world's most innovative, complex and challenging projects. Norton Rose Fulbright was ranked as a top four global project finance legal advisor by volume for 2025, with deals valued at more than US$90 billion in aggregate (IJGlobal Q1, 2026).
