WHY BOX NEEDS YOU
Artificial intelligence has been rapidly advancing in recent years, particularly in the area of generative AI. With the help of new large language models and massive amounts of data, AI systems are now able to understand and generate content at an unprecedented scale. Box AI is a brand new capability that was recently GA’ed by Box to harness the power of these advanced AI models in the Box Content Cloud. Box AI makes it easier than ever to uncover and share insights, find timely answers to critical questions, and effortlessly create content based on an organization’s data in Box. As a staff machine learning engineer on the Box AI team, you will work directly with senior leadership at Box and play a pivotal role in defining our AI strategy while building out the AI Platform that powers Box AI. This is a unique opportunity to work on the bleeding edge of machine learning and generative AI to define how billions of enterprise users get work done.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Serve as a technical leader for Box AI, contributing to strategy, roadmap and decision making.
- Research and rapidly prototype unique ways to apply LLMs and other advance machine learning techniques to power Box AI capabilities
- Drive domain level goals and provide technical direction to key initiatives
- Understand industry & company-wide trends in the AI space to assess & develop new opportunities and influence staffing / prioritization for these ideas.
- Keep up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in the field of generative AI and machine learning, and apply relevant techniques to solve real-world problems.
- Partner & collaborate with organization leaders to help improve the level of performance of the team & organization
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior members of the team.
WHO YOU ARE
- You are passionate about solving hard machine learning problems using data-driven solutions
- You like to be an owner and strive to do work you’re proud of, both technically and in your team interactions
- Able to inspire other people to work with you, and you enjoy mentoring and coaching, as well as learning from other engineers
- You’ve proven track record of designing, building and deploying machine learning systems at scale from the ground up.
- You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with large and complex datasets.
Must Have Experience
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field, with a focus on machine learning
- 8+ years of industry experience in one of these areas: machine learning, recommendation systems, search relevance, pattern recognition, NLP, or artificial intelligence
- 12+ years of experience in programming languages (Python, C++, Java or R) with technical background
- Proven track record of planning multi-year roadmap in which short-term projects ladder to the long-term vision
- Experience leading large cross-functional engineering efforts with multiple stakeholders
- Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, NumPy, pandas)
- Strong understanding of statistical modeling, data structures, and algorithms
Nice To Have Experience
- Past experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) architecure
- Deep understanding / expertise in one of these areas: information retrieval, natural language processing, query understanding, query expansion, ML for image / video
- Significant publications or contributions to the machine learning community

Actual base salary (or OTE if commissionable role) is dependent upon factors such as: knowledge, skill level, experience, and work location. This role is also eligible for equity and benefits.
