Requirements
- A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing registered nurse license or multistate license is required, or the ability to obtain one before the start date.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
- A minimum associate degree is required.
- The ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English is required.
- American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted certification is required within six months of the start date.
- The position requires the applicable specialty certification listed for the assigned area, including Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Cardiac/Critical Care, Perioperative, PACU, or Clinical Support/Cardiac Monitoring Unit roles; Pediatric Advanced Life Support and other listed certifications apply to their respective units.
- The position requires the ability to communicate clearly and accurately, make decisions affecting others, delegate to team members and students, receive delegation, address conflict and stressful situations, and work under time pressure.
- The position requires the ability to work onsite, tolerate prolonged standing and walking, perform medium work involving force up to 50 pounds occasionally, and work prolonged shifts.
- The position requires the ability to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation and to have normal or corrected hearing and vision.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate nursing care while maintaining professional nursing practice standards and positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Supervise LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs, and other non-licensed staff.
- Assess each assigned patient on admission and continuously thereafter, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
- Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
- Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care, coordinating care plans with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
- Apply safety principles during patient care.
- Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
- Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
- Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with measures, and supporting and implementing improvement changes.
- Perform initial and annual competency assessments for the applicable job class.
- Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards, Health System policies, and procedures.
- Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
- Identify and reduce unsafe practices and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards.
- Use electronic mail, time-and-attendance software, learning-management software, the intranet, telephone, and texting as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Demonstrated leadership skills are preferred or expected in the working context.
