Requirements
  • At least 6 years of experience in a Linux systems, infrastructure, or site reliability engineering role.
  • Expert-level Linux knowledge, including performance analysis with tools such as perf, strace, ss, iostat, and bpftrace or equivalents.
  • A disciplined, hypothesis-driven troubleshooting approach.
  • Strong systems fundamentals covering processes and signals, systemd, cgroups, namespaces, filesystems, memory exhaustion, and file descriptors.
  • Production-scale declarative configuration management experience with Salt, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet, including authoring and maintaining the code.
  • Production experience with Kubernetes or Nomad, including scheduling, resource pressure, rollouts, and debugging workloads that fail to start.
  • Strong Bash skills and working Python knowledge for maintainable scripting and automation.
  • Foundational networking knowledge covering VLANs, routing, DNS, DHCP, TCP behavior, and TLS.
  • Proxy and load-balancing experience with Nginx or HAProxy.
  • Virtualization experience with at least one of VMware, Xen, or KVM.
  • Daily use of Git and peer review, with the discipline to keep changes reviewable.
  • Strong written communication skills for runbooks, design proposals, and incident write-ups.
  • Ability to become productive quickly in areas without existing depth.
Responsibilities
  • Own Linux performance by diagnosing and tuning systems under production load, including CPU scheduling, NUMA placement, memory and page-cache behavior, disk and filesystem input/output, and network-stack tuning.
  • Lead troubleshooting of difficult incidents using hypothesis-driven investigation, write postmortems, organize follow-up tasks, and prevent recurring issues.
  • Write and maintain declarative configuration-management code using Salt, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet, with review, testing, and version control.
  • Build, deploy, and operate containerized services on Kubernetes or Nomad, including scheduling behavior, resource limits, health checking, and contention-related failure modes.
  • Automate repetitive work in Bash and Python by replacing manual runbooks with tooling.
  • Operate core network services, troubleshoot TCP/IP, and manage DNS and DHCP in production, including zones, resolver behavior, TTL strategy, scopes, reservations, and relay configuration.
  • Configure and troubleshoot Nginx and HAProxy for routing, TLS termination, health checks, and connection handling.
  • Support Redis and RabbitMQ in production.
  • Provision and maintain virtual machines across VMware, Xen, or KVM, including capacity planning, host maintenance, and live migration.
  • Use Vault for secret storage, dynamic credentials, policy, and rotation, and help migrate the organization from its previous approach.
  • Maintain log aggregation on the Elastic Stack and alerting through Nagios, CheckMK, or Icinga; tune alerts toward actionable signals.
  • Use Git and pull requests for changes and review other engineers' changes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Production ownership of Redis or RabbitMQ as a primary responsibility rather than as a dependency.
  • Vault administration, including policies, authentication methods, and rotation at scale.
  • Elastic Stack operations at volume, including index lifecycle, mapping decisions, and cluster tuning.
  • Experience in a regulated environment or an environment where downtime has a direct revenue cost.
  • Colocation or bare-metal experience, including hardware lifecycle, remote hands, and capacity planning against a finite footprint.
