The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is currently seeking a full time Ophthalmic Technician 2 to work in our Palm Beach Gardens campus. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.

Core Job Functions

1. Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record.

• Reason for visit • Tangent screen visual fields

• Chief complaint • Basic ocular motility

• History of present illness • Pupillary evaluation

• Basic review of systems • Ocular surface assessment

• Review systemic and ocular medications • Eye drop administration

• Record allergies • Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care

• Pharmacy information • Pachymetry

• Family, social, medical, and ocular history • Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses

• Visual acuity at distance and near • Color vision test

• Lensometry • Stereopsis test

• Manual refraction • Sensorimotor exam

• Confrontational fields • Automated & manual perimetry

• Humphrey visual fields • Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields

• Amsler Grid visual field

2. Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
3. Provides patient-centric care.
4. Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
5. Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
6. Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
7. Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
8. Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
9. Meets daily productivity goals.
10. Maintains JCAHPO certifications.
11. Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
12. Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
13. Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
14. Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
15. Works evenings and weekends as needed.
16. Performs organizational duties as assigned.
17. Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
18. Facilitates motility exams.
19. Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
20. Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams.
21. Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
22. Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives.
23. Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members

24. Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent

• Required Certification and Licensing:

• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)

• BLS certification

• Two years of relevant experience

• Exhibits ability to perform the appropriate patient workup using EMR telehealth platform.
• Demonstrates competency in all ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups.
• Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.
• Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office.
