The Rodney L. White Center for Financial Research at the Wharton School is seeking a pre-doctoral research specialist to support quantitative research in financial economics. The research specialist will work closely with Finance Professors Amy W. Huber, Karen K. Lewis, and Yao Zeng. Candidates should have a strong interest in international finance and financial intermediation, along with expertise in modern methods for analyzing large datasets.

Job responsibilities include identifying and collecting financial data from a variety of sources (covering a wide range of topics including housing transactions, sovereign debt holdings, financial and economic forecasts, and holdings by various bank and non-bank financial institutions); cleaning and compiling datasets from these sources, performing statistical and econometric modeling and analyses; writing research reports; conducting background research and literature reviews; and proof-reading research papers and presentations. Independent thinking, an understanding of financial economics or related disciplines and self-motivation are highly valued in performing these functions.

A successful pre-doctoral research specialist will work in this challenging position for 1-2 years, possess a strong desire to expand and deepen skills in research and quantitative data analysis, and emerge prepared to apply for PhD programs in Economics or Finance. Research specialist will be encouraged to be an active part of the Wharton research community, which can include attending seminars, exploring personal research interests, and taking graduate-level classes at Wharton. The Research specialist will join a cohort of pre-doctoral Research Specialists both in the Finance Department and across other departments at the Wharton School. The candidate will also be expected to assist as needed in select Rodney White Center programs and activities.

The start date for this position is July 1, 2025. Annual salary is in the range of $56,000-58,000 plus benefits.

This is a full-time, limited-term position typically intended for recent graduates who are seeking predoctoral research experience. The position is designed for a duration of 1-2 years and cannot be extended beyond the initial term. The estimated last day of employment is on or about June 30, 2027.

Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• BA/BS in Economics, Finance, Statistics, or a related discipline and 1 to 2 years of research experience (potentially done while completing a Bachelor’s Degree).
• Research experience should include conducting independent research using statistical software such as STATA, Matlab, Mathematica, or R.Additional coding skills would be valued but not required.
• The ability to analyze data, derive proofs, and write reports.
• They should be self-directed, intrinsically motivated and have the capacity to manage work independently.
• An interest in financial intermediation and/or the impact of central banks on financial markets.
