Requirements
  • Maintains current Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse licensure for the State of Maine.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Depending on department staffing needs, may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of aseptic techniques and infection control principles.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform effectively in highly stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, physicians, patients, and their families.
Responsibilities
  • Administers care according to established nursing standards and hospital policy.
  • Takes responsibility for assuring that safe patient care is maintained.
  • Demonstrates a systematic approach to care and treatment.
  • Supports multidisciplinary involvement in the plan of care.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians in a timely manner.
  • Obtains and documents patient vital signs, pain level, smoking history, and weight for physician review.
  • Obtains a medication list from patients at each visit and updates the medication list in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Provides Infusion Suite nurses with updated medication lists for mutual patients.
  • Educates patients and their families.
  • Processes laboratory work and office procedures, schedules diagnostic or specialty testing, and educates patients about procedures and preparation.
  • Submits charges for procedures, medication administration, and laboratory collection as appropriate.
  • Prepares and cleans examination rooms and stocks medical supplies as needed.
  • Assesses all clinical calls with the provider to determine acuity.
  • Maintains smooth flow in the daily schedule between providers and patients.
  • Maintains the Electronic Medical Record and ensures that results are appropriately scanned into the system.
  • Relays patient prescriptions to the pharmacist upon provider orders, follows up on orders, notifies patients of test results, and closes the loop on orders in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Maintains EPIC work queues for medications, imaging, and outside referrals.
  • Reviews and obtains necessary pre-authorization approval for patients.
  • Ensures that informed consent is obtained before all procedures.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff.
  • Recognizes coworkers' individual learning needs and provides opportunities to address those needs.
  • Responds appropriately to workload changes during the shift.
  • Participates in evaluating the quality of nursing care provided and patient care outcomes.
  • Recognizes personal development needs and takes initiative to set measurable professional growth goals.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability.
  • Provides compassionate care to the hematology and oncology patient population.
  • Complies with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
